accomadate?
Dukejr01: hmmm... well, how big is the
manor, isn't it designed for 20 regulars and
to hold off an army of 700+ with thespear
levy and militia helping?

Missiledine: True, in a siege you could jam
a lot of people in there. But in day to day
circumstances, with wives, kids, girlfriends,
screamiing babies...
Missiledine: There are acouple rooms at
the inn, but that won't cover all the problems
forever.
Dukejr01: okay. i lost the floor plans in teh
great system crash. i believe
Missiledine: Gallus will suggest that for your
Housecarls you might want to arrange
some small houses to be built
Dukejr01: the manor has a second floor
doesn't it?
Missiledine: I'll send it again
Dukejr01: that sounds like a good idea.
Missiledine: yes, and a basement
Dukejr01: maje it smaller. no hurry
Dukejr01: how small of houses,. cottages
with four rooms and a loft or larger?

Missiledine: Also, there is a very large
stable that has a second floor. It is not far
from the main house and might be
convertable into apartment type units
Dukejr01: cool. that would be neat. too bad

Missiledine: cottages, I have a couple floor
plans, but that general idea
tacit01: or something with an ocean view...
Dukejr01: going to build a small houe/lab
for my alchemist buddy anyway. one a
hundred yards away from the rest of us.
Missiledine: Each family should have a
residence. Men at arms will be at their
posts while on duty
Missiledine: river/mill pond or swamp
Dukejr01: small cottages with room for a
garden would be ideal.
Missiledine: some families can live in the
manor, like Gallus and Nordan and Ollyn,
but the new people...
Missiledine: I'll work out some cost
eastimates, but you might want to let the
villagers know that some accomadations
need to be prepped now
Dukejr01: okay. send a message via the
church thingie.
Missiledine: That tent you bought will be
invaluable

Dukejr01: oh. we were talking about
recruiting a cook. any luck?
Missiledine: that and the inn and manor
should do for the short term,

houses. good thing Athamar has
archetecture and earth spells.

retainers families and your housecarl

Missiledine: I have not worked up all the
retainer skills yet, but two I have done that
you may be interested in... One of the men
at arms was trained as a smyth by his
father. Gave it up for the excitement of
campaigning, but still has some skill

docks around the crack of dawn
Missiledine: The crew of the barge just
shake their heads as the circus pulls in,
then set about getting it loaded

Dukejr01: Athamar sees to his horse.

Missiledine: It'll take a good three hours to
get everything sorted and stowed. Another
half hour to collect the children and sixteen
puppies

animals, of course

you and says, "My Lord, I think we are
ready to push off."

the crew, looks over the lot, and then finds a

Missiledine: Since the Varsol river flows
south, there really isn't much to do except
steer the ship clear of other vessels and
watch out for logs and snags. The captain
will tell you that come dark there will be
need to watch for river pirates (Brigands
with boats) but the daylight hours are safe
enough.
Dukejr01: Athamar talks to Ollyn and we set
watches.
Dukejr01: the women can take what cabins
there are.
Missiledine: The docks of Velitrium are
very busy, mostly with river traffic, fishing
boats headed out to the lake and larger
boats plying the lake with cargo bound for
Rannoch, Glenluce or the coastal towns.
The Crown owns three or four small galleys
and a half a dozen coasters for patroling
the lake and river. That is the extent of
the Velitrium navy
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: only have the one lake....
Missiledine: There has never, to your
knowledge, been a see battle. They Crown
uses galleys only because they are very
fast in the calm waters in shore. Most
problems are from river pirates, who
paddle out in small boats under the cover of
dark and try to take a sleeping crew
Dukejr01: okay. we have 8 troops. we can
set double watches.
Missiledine: Most river traffic and a lot of
the coastal traffic is by flat bottom barge
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: Athamar provides a cont light
object for the men one watch. covre it with
leather so it can be used in an emergency.
Dukejr01: one = on
Missiledine: Barges, like this one, are
poled and rowed, or allowed to drift with the
current. The last 70+ miles of this trip will be
against the current
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: is there enoguh crew to poll or
are we expecte to pitch in?
Missiledine: The day will pass quietly. Tho it
is late September it is still quite hot out and
everyone is looking for shade.
Dukejr01: Athamar will cast Sense foes on
the crew. quietly, by the end of the day, he
should be able to nail all of them with it,
Missiledine: The crew will pole, but the
extra help will get you there faster
Dukejr01: we should ahve tarps set those
up.
Dukejr01: uset he tent
Missiledine: ok, you do not detect any foes
or hostiles amongst the crew
Missiledine: any other spells?
Dukejr01: okay. A will talk to Ollyn, see who
can be used. no more than two, trade off
regularly.
Missiledine: tent works fine
Dukejr01: not that I can think of
Missiledine: Won't need polers until you
leave Drunmore
Dukejr01: got it
Missiledine: The countryside around
Velitrium is pretty heavily farmed, but by
late afternoon there is an increasing
amount of woodland along the banks
Missiledine: That afternoon you will pass by
the town of Varsol, the captain says that
during the night, after midnight, you will
enter the Coruna Forest. Then you'll
really need to stay alert
Dukejr01: okay. we should have three
people on watch at that time, then. maybe
only one at an earlier watch.
Missiledine: ok, there will be a crewman on
the bow keeping look out at all times, and
one at the tiller
Dukejr01: we could light the ship up, I mean
really lightt he ship up, but that would leave
snipers in the dark firing on lit targets/
Missiledine: Because of the need to watch
for logs and snags, as well as oncoming
traffic, there will be several lights burning all
night
Dukejr01: okay. does the captain want cont
light instead or in addition?
Missiledine: typically, bow and stern.. There
would be one on the mast, but it doesn't
have a mast
Missiledine: sure
Missiledine: instead, save the oil
Dukejr01: Okay. Athamar does so.
Dukejr01: and save on fire danger.
Dukejr01: have lamps ready jsut in case.
might want to keep one lit
Dukejr01: the presense of obvious magic
might discourage - or encourage - raiders,
but A won;t say anything.
Missiledine: Towards dusk you pass the
town of Corunna, on the west bank (Varsol
was on the east) It looks to be a misty/foggy
night on the river. Actually the
lake, the city of Velitrium and the Varsol
river experience fog almost every night
from mid fall to early summer
Missiledine: The waters of the lake and the
out flowing Varsol are much warmer than
the air at night
Missiledine: and during many winter days
for that matter
Dukejr01: interesting.
Missiledine: If you watch over the side you
will see Coohlari, some enormous frogs,
huge fish and other assorted wildlife... It
isn't a good river to swim
Dukejr01: hmmm.... big frogs.
Missiledine: A few of the men and some of
the kids, will spend the day fishing. They
catch some fair sized fish and a couple
frogs....
Missiledine: At one point, one of the kids
hooks a Coohlari, but it breaks the line.
That is the big excitement of the day
Missiledine: As dark settles in and the fog
rises, the kids and most of the passengers
bed down for the night
Missiledine: The captain says that it is time
to start your people on extra watch
Dukejr01: Athamar makes a personal
space for himself amonst some of the
boxes adn crates. he keeps his bedroll etc
there.
Dukejr01: okay.
Dukejr01: Athamar stays awake for the first
watch,
Missiledine: Even in the dark and fog, you
can see thatr the west bank is becoming
wilder and more overgrown with each mile.
The chorus of frogs and insects
becomes louder and louder. The sounds
intersperced with the cries of birds and the
splashing of Coohlari
Dukejr01: nocturnal birds, cool
Missiledine: From the river banks you can
occaissionaly hear the sounds of predator
and prey, as well as the quieter sounds of
the forest
Missiledine: The east bank, tho somewhat
overgrown, still shows signs of civilization.
You will pass several villages, still lit up in
the early evening, as well as lone
farmsteads
Missiledine: The captain says that you
haven't reached the forest yet
Dukejr01: Athamar nods
Missiledine: If all goes well, the town of
Neuss will be on the east bank just before
dawn
Dukejr01: Athamar prefers to sit in the
shadows, near his little personal space.
watching the world go by..... he checks on
his siblings
Missiledine: The next several hours pass
quietly enough, then suddenly everyone is
awakened by the cry of the crew and
guards. "Whats that!" "It's up there!" What
in Mitra's name was that?"
tacit01: <time to wake up>
Dukejr01: Athamar sits up and looks
around.
tacit01: J grabs her spear
Missiledine: Something has swept past in
the darkness above. The beat of heavy
wings is heard and then its gone... What
ever it was, it was bigger than any bird and
moving very fast
Missiledine: Everyone is peering up,
looking in all directions, gripping weapons
tightly
Dukejr01: Athamar does a head count
Missiledine: All present and accounted
tacit01: What is the sky like - cloudy or
clear, moon phase? - or it it too foggy?
Dukejr01: Athamar grunts.
Missiledine: its pretty foggy down here, but
you see glimpses of a starry sky
tacit01: k
Dukejr01: Athamar sits back down
Missiledine: The captain shakes his head,
He's never heard or seen anything like it...
He makes the sign against evil and goes
about his buisness
Missiledine: It takes awhile for everyone to
settle down again, but they do evetually,
and the night passes quietly until the
sounds of civilization wake you before
dawn
Dukejr01: okay. breakfast.
Missiledine: In the fog you can hear voices
talking and laughing, the sound of a smyth
hammering steel, horses complaining,
wagoons rumbling... You are passing
Neuss
Dukejr01: "Are we there yet?" :-)
Dukejr01: Athamar tells his brother to shut
it.
Missiledine: The lights of the docks are
dimly seen in the fog. They can also see
yours and voices hail you. The captain
answers, identfying himself
tacit01: :-)
Missiledine: (Don't worry, I'll get to them)
Dukejr01: <One day, boy, All this will be
yours..." "What the curtains?"
Missiledine: (You guys watch too much TV)
Dukejr01: monty python. we watch monty

Missiledine: I know, Holy Grail
Missiledine: I watch it too

Missiledine: I too had a misspent youth....

Missiledine: As you drift past the docks, the
captain starts barking orders and the crew
hurries to their poles. Extra lookouts hurry
forward and peer into the murk...
There is an air of tension about
Dukejr01: not much Athamar can do about
fog
Missiledine: Nobody has seemed this
tense up till now.. Everyone seems to be
waiting for something
Missiledine: The captain drums his fingers
on the rail, staring intently ahead, suddenly
one of the look outs shout, "To the left!
There's one!" The captain hurries
forward, peers into the fog then starts
ordering the crew on the port side to begin
poling hard
Missiledine: You hear him mutter, "Damned
bridge! Outta hang a bloody light on it!"
Dukejr01: no kidding.
Missiledine: In the gloom overhead you can
see a bridge of stone and wood. To the left
is passing, barely, one of the pilingss that
hold it up
tacit01: I almost readied a spear to defend
us from the approching bridge?!
Missiledine: A few minutes later you are
safely through and everyone relaxes again
Missiledine: (Ya coulda asked someone)
Dukejr01: Athamar does his salubations.
Dukejr01: padon my spelling
Dukejr01: <snort>
Missiledine: (Clean the poop from your
pants?)
Dukejr01: in a dignified mannor, naturally,.
we nobles have to keep a stiff upper lip,
wot?
Dukejr01: manner
Dukejr01: shave bath shit and spit.
Missiledine: Over the next several hours the
sky brightens, but the fog is slow to lift and
isn't completely gone until late morning
Missiledine: You have Manor on the brain
Missiledine: The day brightens and will pass
quietly. THe Captain says that youll be in
Drunmore tomorrow afternoon
Dukejr01: k
Missiledine: Tonight, you'll pass along the
Girvan Forest, also on the west bank. That is
the last risky stretch before Drunmore... You
heara the crew telling your
people that Girvan Wood is haunted
Dukejr01: okay. double watches again
Missiledine: "They say," says the capt, "That
Girvan is full of Jhensari Tombs and their
spirits haunt the wood"
Dukejr01: btw: spending 5 points. Second
Sight - 2 pts, less sleep. 3points.
Missiledine: (Sure, they'll kick in during your
next incarnation)
Dukejr01: athamar grins. "That may very well
be. Hope we don't find out, though."
Missiledine: The day passes quietly. There is
quite a bit of river traffic, but nothing worth
noting
Missiledine: With dusk comes the fog
Dukejr01: Athamar keeps an eye on his
siblings and reads.
Missiledine: (Trashy novel?)
Dukejr01: Yeah. Lust in the Dust. Dirk's erotic
adventures among the dessert tribes. nah.

Missiledine: As darkness falls the now
familiar night sounds increase and the fog
thickens.
Dukejr01: Athamar stays awake for the first
watch again.
Missiledine: You have passed several more
towns today, as well as a couple bridges
(They are no problem in daylight) but after the
last town, Corbridge, the signs
of civilization (on the west bank) dropped off
quickly
Missiledine: You are now drifting along Girvan
Forest
Missiledine: About two hours after full datk,
one of the guards calls (softly), "My Lord,
there are lights moving over there."
Dukejr01: Athamar gets up to take a look.
Missiledine: Looking towards the west bank
you can see, dimly, lights that seem to be
floating above the water's surface
Dukejr01: does the crew lookout see it?
Missiledine: They drift, sometimes slowly,
sometimes the dart about, rising and falling
Missiledine: yes, everyone is looking now
Dukejr01: k.
Dukejr01: Athamar casts Sense foes
Missiledine: The Captain shakes his head,
"Spirits are out"
Missiledine: Hard to say how far away they
are. The fog is playing tricks
Dukejr01: k. nevermind. if any of them come
close. then. makes sure someone is looking
BEHIND us
Missiledine: "Nothing over here, My Lord"
Dukejr01: good. woudn;t want a ruse to take
us off our guard
Missiledine: They seem to be pacing the boat
tacit01: J has spear (not that it'll help), keeps
an eye out
Missiledine: The captain whispers to you, "Its
believed that if one touches the boat, then
someone aboard will die."
Dukejr01: well, if one comes close Athamar
casts sense foes.
Missiledine: From the fog comes an eerie
wailing sound.. It rises and falls in pitch and
volume
Missiledine: (How big an area?)
Dukejr01: Athamar says "hmmmm... odd."
Dukejr01: oh, say 4 hexes, to catch the little
bugger
Missiledine: Hmm, ok
tacit01: Are the horses disturbed by the
sound? - If so, J will tend to them
Dukejr01: good thinking. Athamar approves
Missiledine: Well, for several minutes things
continue like this, then the wailing begins to
rise in volume... As the shrieking increases
the horses whinny and the dogs
begin yapping and yowling. People are
covering their ears in pain
Dukejr01: source?
Missiledine: Suddenly the lights come
shrieking towards the boat, passing in front,
behind, overhead...
Missiledine: The sound is all around you
Missiledine: You cast your spell and feel
definant, malignant hostility
Dukejr01: Athamar readies his staff.
Missiledine: The lights pass across the boat
and vanish as though snuffed out. The
shrieking stops. In the silence you can hear
several people praying aloud
Dukejr01: Athamar does a head count.
Missiledine: All present... so far
Dukejr01: k. second sight doesn't takeeffect
til next game
Dukejr01: ?
Missiledine: While your busy counting noses,
some one yells, "Look at that!"
Dukejr01: Athamar looks
Missiledine: From the west side it seems as
though a mound of muddy water is swelling
upwards, rising up and moving towards the
barge
Dukejr01: how big?
Missiledine: the 'mound' is about twelve or
fifteen feet across and five or six feet high
Missiledine: It is moving towards you at a bit
better than a man could walk
Dukejr01: okay. water or earth?
Dukejr01: Athamar moves toward it.
Missiledine: It will, in its present state, clear
the side by about two feet
Missiledine: both, but a lot of it is mud
Dukejr01: Athamar cast Shape earth. he
moves toward it chanting aloud.
Missiledine: ok, the spell goes off, what are
you seeking to accomplish?
Dukejr01: he is moving the earth out of the
water. pushing it away. hopefully that will take
most of the mass and energy out of it. he puts
all three points from his
powerstone into it, along with.... 8 of his own.
that will make a 6 hex ssshape earth
Missiledine: Hmm, ok
Dukejr01: 12 - 1 for skill = 11
Missiledine: ok, you make it, at first nothing
seems to happen, but then it seems as
though the swell of water actually speeds its
approach, but the volume seems to
drop off
Dukejr01: If I knew it were a critter, he would
entomb it,. but it may jsut bea spell effect
Dukejr01: okay. athamar keeps the earth out
of its mass. and grabs ahold of something.
Missiledine: The water rteaches the barge,
rocks it vilontly, everyone is grabbing for
support, the horses are screaming in fear
Missiledine: Then the swell is past and the
water seems calm again
tacit01: J tries to calm the horses...
Dukejr01: whew. any damage?
Missiledine: The captain yells, "Pole ya
bloody bastards! Pole for yer lives!"
Missiledine: The crew puts their backs into it,
the boat speeds up, some, and you leave the
area behind
Dukejr01: good idea. "Grab a pole." Athamar
suits deed to word.
Missiledine: No injuries, other than bruises,
and the horses are soon calmed
Missiledine: Everyone is alert and tense that
night, but nothing more will occur. No more
sounds or lights or anything at all odd
Dukejr01: k.
Dukejr01: Athamar tries to sleep
Missiledine: The captain comes to you and
says, "Thank you, M'Lord. You saved us back
there."
Dukejr01: Athamar nods "Thank you, Didn't
know exactly what it was, so I thought I would
take some of the wind out of its sails, so to
speak,"
Missiledine: Dawn finds you still coasting
along the last bit of the Girvan Forest, but
soon your out in civilization again
Missiledine: "It worked just fine!"
Missiledine: Early afternoon sees the junction
of the Varsol and Lendalefoot rivers. The
Captain says that you are only a few hours
from Drunmore now.
Missiledine: There is a lot more traffic here,
but its all perfectly ordinary. About two hours
later you are tying up at the public docks while
the captain and crew are
exchanging greetings with the dock hands.
Missiledine: As your people prepare to
disembark for a much needed stretch, the
capt asks, "How long will we stay here,
M'Lord?"
Dukejr01: Right. everyone out to stretch legs.
the animals can stay aboard. Shifts so that a
couple guards sstay to keep an eye on
belongings and animals.
Dukejr01: okay.
tacit01: Sould the horses be walked - the've
been without exercise 2 days
Dukejr01: Athamar says. I think overnight. but
I will know more in a couple hours. I will find
out and inform you as soon as possible.
Dukejr01: hmmm.. good point.
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: we will call it here.
Dukejr01: night, thanks
