You climb the stairs to Heron's level. As you approach the door you hear a pretty feminine voice singing an old Velitar love song. The girl seems to sing very well.

Immediately the singing stops and a melodious, "Coming!" is heard. A moment later a pretty strawberry blond opens the door and smiles. "Ah! You must be my Instructor, Master Lingsted. Please, come in." She steps back to let you pass.

"Good afternoon. Before we begin your instruction I need to know what sort of exposure you have had to magic up to this point."

She sits down on a low, padded bench. "Exposure? Oh! I see. Hmmm, well of course I've seen it, but I've never done any, if that is what you mean."

"Done it, talked to a practitioner about it, dealt with any of the theory. Attempted a spell that didn't work? I have a few books here I want you to start your reading with, start with whichever one is of greatest interest to you. I'll be back two days from now in the morning to see how you are doing, and answer any questions you might have then."

Character: Karl Lingsted
She accepts the paper with quiet thanks and sees you to the door.
(I don't think you want to spend your time roleplaying school. So, if its agreeable with you, I will set up a normal weekly schedule that reflects the routine of the Academy and your classes, then we will compress time for a couple weeks and get into a little more meat, so to speak. Is there any special activities that you want to make time for every week?)
PBEM Exchange
Series 2 PC POST # 24
Character: Karl Lingsted
For the first week he will spend extra time exploring the capabilities of the students, using his extra time increasing his knowledge of alchemy and going for walks with his wife. When his wife is cooking he will have one of the students who is studying alchemy assist her so they can get used to some of the herbal components, and will ocassionally have one of them help her out with other things around the house, as well as whatever other little tasks he can set them to to keep them motivated. He'll also spend some of his time getting the parts for and crafting a ruby ring, with a $50 ruby which he plans to enchant later.
PBEM Exchange
Series 2 GM POST # 25
Character: Karl Lingsted
No problem having the students help out with the chores, however, since they all grew up in lower class homes (without servants) and have all had hands on experience cooking and preparing food in a world without prepackaged food, they will gain very little additionaly in the way of skills or familiarity with recipes and ingredients from the kitchen chores.
As for crafting the ring. The materials to make the ring, the gold and jewelry are easily obtained, but you need to be more specific as to what you envision in regards to mass, form, purity, quality of stone etc. There are shops in the Academy where the tools are available for melting the gold, forming the mold, casting, shaping, polishing etc. Alternatively, if you want your own set of jewelers tools you will need to purchase them.
PBEM Exchange
Series 2 PC POST # 25
Character: Karl Lingsted
I will be quizzing them over the appearance and properties of some of
the herbs used in alchemy to make the kitchen lessons somewhat more
relevant. As for the ring, a small high quality gem would be good, probably a star ruby. I'm planning to enchant it with ignite after I make the ring,so thaumaturgical requirements will take precedent over aesthetic.
PBEM Exchange
Series 2 GM POST # 26
Character: Karl Lingsted
You and your students soon settle into a work/study routine (Details to
follow.) As for the ring. The gold is no problem to obtain, tho jewelry grade has a higher percentage of gold than does coin gold. You are probably looking at$100 worth of gold. The Ruby is a bit more involved. A plain ruby, as opposed to a star ruby, of excellant quality, will run about $700 per carat. Now all you need is a chip, say 2.5 points (10 points to a carat) and you can probably get away with a stone of middling quality, say $350 per carat. Call it $85 for the stone
Working within the available lab and enchantment schedules, you are free
to do as you wish. The Library is always open.
The times that are unavailable represent those periods when all work
areas are previously sceduled or when an enchantment of such importance
and delicacy is being done that absolutely no risk of accident can be
tolerated.
During normal open times you are free to do your own enchantments,
indeed most teachers use their students as aids in enchanting items for
themselves, tho it is also understood that at some point in their
student careers you will help them enchant something as well.
Sometimes the school will request that you and the students work on a
special project, either to benefit the school directly or for a
beneficial patron. Usually this is a matter of being available to fill a
circle and provide energy.

The Chancellor welcomes you and offers a glass of wine. Once you are settled he says, "So, I hope that all is going well? I haven't heard of any problems." He will pause to await your response, then continue.
"As you know, it generally falls to the junior faculty to do a lot of the dirty little jobs that we old codgers no longer want to involve ourselves in. I actually have quite a back list of these." He says with a grin. "And I'd like to start with one of our oldest, err, chores." He gathers some papers and looks them over for a second. "It has been an oft postponed job.
Not particularly arduous or difficult, but time consuming. As I'm sure your aware, the Alchemy Lab uses prodigious quantities of minerals, salts, chemicals and earths. The source for these materials is many and varied.
Quite a few are imported from the Desert of Nygg. Some are brought in by traders and caravans, others are mined at the salt lake at the bottom of the cliff beneath the falls. We have a contractor who works the lake area, gathering these materials. He has a warehouse in the town of Nygg (outside the fortress) and has stockpiled a fair quantity. We will not make payment on these materials or accept delivery, until they have been inspected and
checked for purity. You will travel yo Nygg, examine the materials, test its purity and accept or reject the shipments. You will have a letter of credit to pay, if the supplies are acceptable. Any questions?"

Series 2 GM POST # 29
Character: Karl Lingsted
"Problems? Hmmm... Well, the biggest problems have been attempts by suppliers to cheat us in regards to the purity of the various compounds. The compounds consist of an assortment of salts, crystals, rare earths and minerals. We don't always know exactly what they will have, tho there are a few regular products that we get. These compounds are collected and brought in from, Mitra knows where! The Desert of Nygg is a veritable treasure house of salts and evaporites, crystals and mineral deposits, if you know where to find it and how to gather it. Unfortunately, the people we have to deal with don't always. What we have had in the past is mislabeled or identified compounds, either done deliberately or by error, and various adulterations in the form of rocks or inert sand being
added to the desired materials to add weight for the bill of sale. This is the main thing we want you to watch for. Chemical impurities are beyond the scope of these merchants to asses and we can work around them once we know they are there. Now you will be inspecting several tonnes of material. I don't expect you to open and examine every container. Try and inspect a representitive sampling though."
He hands you a list of materials. "Based on what we have purchased in the past, this is the most likely inventory you will find and as you see, I have marked what we are willing to pay per pound. You have room for some variation. If you can get something at a bargain rate, I won't complain if you pay a bit more for something else. And don't feel obligated to buy everything he has! Though, if you get a real bargin on something, go ahead and grab it. I know a few private alchemists we can pass it along to and maybe even make a few farthings on the deal." He adds with a smile
"You will need to arrange transport from one of the freight companies, I've listed several that we have used in the past and are reliable and your letter of credit has budgeted for half the freight cost, balance paid on delivery. Our man in Nygg is one, Master Rutus Dhara. An importer who works with many of the desert caravans. I have had dealings with him many times in the past, I wouldn't say he's dishonest, but he won't hesitate to exploit weakness either.
You are the Agent for the Academy, and I am empowering you with full authority
to negotiate for the Academy. In the past it has come about that the Desert Traders have brought in, uhm, interesting artifacts to sell. Dhara has always made a point of bringing these to our attention when we are there. If such a situation arises it will be at your discretion to decide on what to do. If you are at a complete loss, then send a messenger to me, or contact a mage in Nygg, an old friend and fellow alumni of mine. His name is Varren Lorma. I trust his opinion and you can too. Otherwise, the Moneylender that the Letter of Credit is drawn with, will be amenable to fronting extra cash as you may need. I am trusting your discretion in this."
"As for when you leave, tomorrow or the next day is fine. Get your students organised. Tell them that if they have any questions they can come see me. I'll keep an eye on them for you. If you want to take them along, its fine by me. Tho excursions like this are usually rewards for hard work. But, you might find a couple strong young backs useful. Especially when you are sifting sacks of salt!"

(There is, as stated in your mission, no need
to actually go into the

Amanda will have learned her language skills
while growing up in Nygg.
Other than day trips into the desert as a child,
and then never far from the
base of the road and the watchful eye of the
Royal Troops that guard it. Most of
the desert peoples are slave takers and
Amanda would have fetched, and still
could fetch, a fine price on an auction block.
Forgot the orphan note. However,
somebody raised her... There are no
orphanages in Velitrium, she'll
probably be anxious to see them.)
Amanda's main suggestions, other than the
basic camping equipment, is a
large tent that can serve as a sun shelter,
extra water bags. Probably a 5gallon
for each horse plus a 1 gallon personal size
for each person. She also says
that everyone should have some type of wide
brimmed hat for shielding against
the sun, that or something to wrap the head
with as some of the desert people
do.
It is into November now and getting cold out,
so winter clothing is in
order. Turek Pol will stop by the evening
before you are scheduled to leave, to
see is there is any special equipment that you
want him to bring.
(Turek will have lamellar armor, helm, med
shield, broadsword, hand axe,
knife and a crossbow)
Ferral, who shows up on schedule, is dressed
to travel with wool tunic,
thick leather jerkin, hooded cloak, knee high
boots, a large dagger and a sling
with a pouch of bullets.
Turek will have an extra light crossbow for
Ferral, apparantly he has

(Then if all is ready we will start the journey in

The morning is cold and frosty when you all
gather at the stables. Turek
has the horses saddled and ready. He has
picked out two quiet palfreys for you
and Amanda and an oversized pony for
Ferral. He has a good looking mount, of
better quality then anything owned by the
Academy. He explains that it is his
personal mount. In addition to the riding
animals, he has a mule loaded with the
camping gear and five days of travel rations.
"We shouldn't need it, with all the
towns and villages between here and Nygg.
But you never know." He says.
Amanda asks what the horses names are
and Turek tells her that she is
riding 'Luki' you are riding 'Polis,' Farrel is
riding 'Baen' and his horse is
'Vather.' The mule is named 'Neld.'
You mount up, Amanda a bit awkwardly, but
her horse is calm and patient.
Riding through the gates you can see that the
Academy is only just stirring for
the day. Glancing back you see the
Chancellor, already up and at his duties,
or maybe he hasn't been to bed yet, you can't
be sure. He is standing by a
sade door to his chambers, when you look
around he raises his hand and waves
farewell.
The City is already well into the process of
waking up. Drunmore is an
old city and most of the streets are cobbled.
The cobbles echo with the hooves and
cart wheels of the vendors and merchants
beginning their days rounds. Other
then those sounds the city is still curiously
quiet. Perhaps as a courtesy to
those still asleep the vendors and tradesmen
keep their voices pitched low as
they transact their business. Later the city will
be alive with noise of the
bustle and commotion, but now it is peaceful.
You will exit the 'Desert Gate' on the road to
Nygg. The City Watch nods
and wishes you a good trip as you pass
through. Beyond the city walls are
still many houses, inns, shops and
businesses. Drunmore long outgrew its main
walls. But it isn't long before the land opens
up into carefully tended fields,
orchards, vineyards and pasture.

decide what its parents goals are and
take positive action to achieve those goals?
At best the parent can hope that
the infants actions do it or them no harm. If in
fact some benefit is achieved
it is a matter of coincidence not the designs
of the baby. The best that a man
can hope, is to have the wherwithal to
recognize the signs given him by Mitra.
To that end he must utilize all the blessings
bestowed upon him to the fullest
extent, in preperation for the call. I have not
felt a call to the Priesthood.
I believe that Mitra gave me the blessing of
the talent instead."

" I do not have to concieve the entire plan to
have some idea of my part
within it. In some ways it is ironic, this
argument, because I had so little
choice in getting where I am. My mother was
a jewler, and did some work for
mages at the acadamy. One of them
recognized my tallent, and when she was
dying she asked that I be signed up to learn
so that somebody would be
watching out for me. But even there I did have
options, what spells to
learn, what subjects to study. I believe that
Where Mitras plan requires us
to do something we will have no choice but to
do it, but where his plan may
allow us options he may expect us to use our
intelligence to choose the best
options for us. And you, my boy, do have
options, and plenty of intelligence
with which to explore them. But these choices
do not need to be made today,
I merely ask that you consider the many paths
open to you from this point,
so that the choices you do make will be well
considered."

Farrel does not reply to this, but you don't feel
as though you have convinced
him.
You will ride peacefully and easily through well
settled countryside. Though
the crops have long since been harvested, it
is still easy to identify what was
planted where. The stubbled fields are now
filled with livestock, turned out to
glean what they can from the harvested fields.
With the last big market done for the season
the roads are fairly quiet, tho
traffic between Nygg and Drunmore never
really drops off during the year. The
roads are busy enough to feel safe, yet open
enough not to feel crowded.
It has warmed up considerably since this
morning, but it is still cool and a
trifle overcast. It will probably rain tonight.
About noon you approach another of the
many small villages that dot the roadway.
Ahead hou can see the sign above an inn, it
is a Red Stag, similar to the type
that are hunted in the lands all about you.
Amanda says, "Let us stop and have
something to eat! I would love to stretch my
legs a bit and sit in a chair."

There is a courtyard beside the inn where
there are stables and fodder available
(for a price) a stable boy will come out quickly
to hold Amanda's horse while
she dismounts. Turek says that Ferral and he
will take care of the horses and
gear and join you shortly.
Entering the inn you find that the common
room is spacious and comfortable
looking, tho the ceiling is a trifle low,
especially where the beams cross. The
floor is flagstone and looks as though it is
regularly swept and washed. Though
there is a midday crowd, there are still a
number of empty tables so finding a
seat is not too difficult.
The establishment seems to be run by an
elderly man and woman, whom you guess
are husband and wife. Behind the bar is
large, strong looking young man who
bears a marked resemblence to the older
man. The woman will come over after a
minute with a smile. "What can I do for you?"

The woman smiles and leaves.
About ten minutes later Turek and Ferral will
join you, bringing your
saddle bags along with them and putting them
on the floor under the table. The
woman returns with the bread and ale and
takes Turek and Ferral's order and
briefly runs down your meal choices. Stews,
meat and vegetarian, hot or cold fowl
of several types, ham, mutton or trout.
After she takes your order and leaves, Turek
says, "Do you want to camp on
the road tonight, or find an inn?"

"I think an inn would be preferable, our
expense account is not so lean that
we need to do without the comfort of a warm
bed."
