Dukejr01: dawn: we left off with Corren climbing down the rope to the mine entrance.
Docportal: Ok I have been having big bugs so I have not seen last weeks run.
Missiledine: I have had no contact from Finn or Rev, has anyone else?
Dukejr01: <ponders popcorn....>

Docportal: Not heard from them in a long time.
Missiledine: hmmm, ok. As of next week their characters will become NPCs unless I hear otherwise from them

Missiledine: Ok, as Duke mentioned... you are gathered on the bluff above the mine shaft entrances. Thorin is acting as rear guard, Corren is beginning his descent to the ground below
Dukejr01: climb climb....
Dukejr01: let me know when Corren hits the ground
Dukejr01: preferably not too hard

Dukejr01: <ow>
Missiledine: The climb down isn't that difficult... You descend down the wall between two of the openings. There are two to your left and one to your right (facing the wall)
Dukejr01: Corren unhitches himself from the rope, unlimbers shield and draws sword. he crouches and looks for tracks.
Missiledine: the ground at the base is rocky, barren soil with scattered, low scrubby weeds giving little protection from soil erosion, there are numerous gulleys cut by rainwater traversing the basin area
Dukejr01: k. glance into the openings. are there any wagon tracks going near or in an opening?
Missiledine: <These gullies are not particularly large, not deep enough for cover, but more then adequate for tripping and falling
Dukejr01: note to self: put one foot in front of the other. got it
Missiledine: there is no sign of wagon tracks approaching any of the openings, but the area around the entrance to middle shaft and the one on the right, looks more beaten then the one on the far left. The ground is not conducive to tracking
Missiledine: who else is coming down?
Dukejr01: corren crouchs. leans his word again the inner part of his thigh. then digs out a torch. h wil ltuck that into his belt. then he goes over to the tailings pile to lookat the dug out area
Missiledine: ok
Missiledine: down at this level the pile is most impressive, the product of decades of digging
Dukejr01: the disturbed area. anything in or around it? any clue as to why someone has pulled out material?
Missiledine: walking around to the side farthest from the bluff face, and closest to the trail, you can see a fair sized pile of stones that have been dug out of the face of the mound
Dukejr01: pile? any order? size? usable as catapult ammo? arrranged?
Missiledine: this pile of stones is stacked right at the edge of where the wagon and team would normally stop, judging by the tracks
Dukejr01: hmmmmm....
Dukejr01: corren looks down the wagon track and then pokes around the piles
Missiledine: a pile, a stack... such as one might make for orderly loading of a wagon
Dukejr01: uniforn size stones?

Missiledine: As to size, the selected stones are all such that one man can handle them. They are mostly flat sided and would make good building material
Dukejr01: ahhh....
Dukejr01: after poking about a bit looking for items that may have been dropped or tracks, Corren will return to the openings.
Missiledine: Rolb is down... he comes over and looks at the pile then turns to study the mine entrances
Dukejr01: corren strikes a torch.
Dawn12: Dawn climbs down
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: Corren points out the more heavily used trail into the openings
Missiledine: FFinn is down

Docportal: <Yes>
Missiledine: <Don't think he's back yet... But I'll say yes.>
Missiledine: <Never mind!>
Dukejr01: "That one?" Corren approaches the opening that is most used
Missiledine: Thorin will remain up top

Missiledine: There are two, which one?

Missiledine: that is the middle shaft

Missiledine: who is leading etc?
Dukejr01: Corren is first.

Missiledine: Ok, Finn is 4th, Rolb is last

Dukejr01: Corren will havea rope handy. on his shoulder.
Missiledine: entering the opening, you find that there is a level area about thirty feet deep and twenty feet wide. At the far end there is a hole in the floor, which is about six feet across and in the back wall is a tall but narrow opening.
Dukejr01: Corren looks for tracks
Dukejr01: or beaten paths.
Dukejr01: check the cieling
Missiledine: On either side of the hole is a set of stone shoulders with a thick, rounded log laying across, to which is tied a rope that dangles into darkness
Missiledine: the ceiling is smooth and obviously worked, it is about 8' high
Dukejr01: Corren heads over to he opening first. he is moving slowly, so he doesnt; fall into any pits.
Missiledine: the floor is stone and seems fairly clean... There is still a fairamount of daylight in here
Dukejr01: good
Dukejr01: Corren will look down the hole.
Missiledine: dark, very, very dark
Dukejr01: Listen
Missiledine: after a moment of concentration you hear two sounds, water running, and either water dripping or a tapping... hard to say which
Dukejr01: Corren whispers "Water and a dripping or tapping"
Dukejr01: "Check out this level first?" Corren heads over to the tall narrow passage
Missiledine: Rolb shrugs and moves to keep an eye on the hole and the entrance while staying near the opening
Dukejr01: Corren nods. he peers into the tall narrow opening. listens. thrusts his torch in. checks the floor for trips or wires.
Missiledine: Your torch reveals a narrow, twisting tunnel with rough hewn stairs descending into darkness
Dukejr01: "Stairs down."
Dukejr01: "betcha that is a well"
Dukejr01: any mechanism to pull up the rope?
Missiledine: Rolb shakes his head, "No well. Probably for drawing up ore."
Dukejr01: Corren grunts.
Dukejr01: Corren heads down the steps.
Missiledine: No mechanism. Actually the log across the opening doesn't look like it was the original
Dukejr01: interesting.
Dukejr01: "New wood." Corren points at it
Missiledine: It is merely resting in place, long enough to extend safelyt across the shoulders. New rope too
Docportal: <onwards to the next level. lol>
Dukejr01: Corren hesitates. "Maybe we should pull the rope up. if there is someone down there, they could escape that way.
Missiledine: The rope is tied, securely. to the log but there is no obvious way to crank or turn the log except by brute force
Missiledine: Finn gives the rope a sharp tug
Dukejr01: Corren listens intently
Missiledine: (Sorry, the Elf does)
Missiledine: the rope is remarkably taut, either it is tied off or has a weight on the other end
Dukejr01: "Hmmmm...."
Dukejr01: "Stairs it is."
Dukejr01: Corren goes down,
Docportal: <long fellow>
Missiledine: <thank you>
Dukejr01: Corren takes ones step at a time.
Dukejr01: puts a foot on the step, eases his weight onto it. is ready to jump back
Missiledine: the path down is narrow, twisty and steep. The lack of cob webs and dust is obvious. The builders did not design for comfort or ease. It was clearly the miner's access and escape route
Dukejr01: down down down
Dukejr01: He says nothign.
Missiledine: It is difficult to judge your depth, but you must be nearing a hundred feet
Dukejr01: wow.
Dukejr01: it keeps going and going.....
Missiledine: Quite unexpectedly you turn yet another corner and find your self facing a large, dark chamber. Simultaneously you are struck in the chest by a powerful crossbow shaft, causing 4 points of damage. You also hear a bell start ringing
Dukejr01: Corren tosses the torch ahead of himself and draws his sword.
Dukejr01: he grunts.
Missiledine: the torch drops about fifteen feet, splashes and goes out with a FIZZ!
Dukejr01: "shit!" Corren ducks bck and gets out another one.
Dukejr01: <this is where someone else might wanna start another torch
Docportal: Shield out in front of me.
Dukejr01: Where is bell?
Dawn12: dawn get a torch
Missiledine: you are all back in the tunnel, out of the doorway, in total darkness
Dukejr01: does the stairs continue?
Missiledine: somewhere in the larger chamber. It rings a good dozen times, then stops
Missiledine: nope. Ends here
Dukejr01: exactly where did the torch go? DOWN?
Missiledine: yep
Dukejr01: corren lights news one
Missiledine: ok
Docportal: shit that means a 15 drop yes?
Dawn12: dawn lights her as well
Missiledine: ok

Dawn12: dawn cast light spell
Docportal: Can anybody fly????!!!
Missiledine: you caught a brief glimpse of the light reflecting off dark water, then fizzzz
Missiledine: On what Dawn?
Dukejr01: Corren pulls out the bolt from his chest and sticks a healing grass smoke in his mouth. lights it from the torch and then steps around to the doorway again. he wil lexpose himself and then dodge back
Missiledine: nothing happens
Dawn12: on the tip of vances sword
Docportal: Can I see a rock on the ground some where we are?
Dukejr01: Corren steps up gain and looks to where the passage goes. in and to the left or right?
Missiledine: the bolt is a heavy, bodkin type that is shot by a serious crossbow.
Missiledine: ok Dawn
Docportal: <Not my sword. oh well I am a great target.>
Dukejr01: "I like Dwarven armour."
Dukejr01: <now you can see at least. even if you go into the water>
Missiledine: no rocks, the floor is pretty clean. Might be able to chip something off
Docportal: <Ture but there will be zombies do there.>
Dukejr01: Corren sucks on his healing grass smoke and steps into the room, he is careful about his footing
Missiledine: the passage opens into a larger chamber in both directions
Docportal: "Corren take out your ax and brack me a rock off this wall."
Dukejr01: he goes right to keep the shield to the center of the room.
Dukejr01: "Kinda busy right now."
Dukejr01: corren is moving in.
Missiledine: there is about four feet of ledge in front of the opening, then it drops away
Docportal: "Be my guest and jump."
Dukejr01: okay. no way across the water?
Missiledine: the ledge extends to either side of the opening abouth six feet
Dukejr01: Corren pulls out a copper coin. "Dawn, can you put a light spell on this?"
Missiledine: Looking down you see that another rough hewn set of steps descends into the water below, following the wall. There is also a heavy iron ring set into the stone with a thick rope stretching into the darkness, above the water
Missiledine: You hear a ratcheting, clicking sound that stops suddenly with a loud Click
Dawn12: "yes" cast light spell on the copper coin
Dukejr01: Corren ducks.
Dukejr01: "Duck"
Docportal: I duck
Missiledine: From somewhere in the farther darkness you hear the snap and twang of a crossbow...
Dawn12: i duck
Dukejr01: Corren covers Dawn
Missiledine: The bolt slaws into the wall where Dawn had been standing a bare second ago, exploding into splinters and rock shards
Missiledine: <slams>
Dukejr01: Corre nshucks the lighted coin across the water.
Dukejr01: chucks
Docportal: roll left but stop be for falling into water
Dukejr01: btw. how many points back for the healing smoke?
Missiledine: it arches outwards, showing a wide, still expanse of dark water, with the rope stretched across the surface, it then splashes into the water, illuminating below surface for a moment until it sinks out of sight

Dukejr01: thanks.
Dukejr01: how far?
Missiledine: no sign of the other side
Dukejr01: Corren gets back into the stairway
Missiledine: did it go? about fifty feet, the ceiling is too low for serious throwing
Missiledine: as the light sunk, it remained visible for four or five seconds, and you had the distinct impression of fish swimming in the glow
Dukejr01: "They probably use a boat. Use the rope to pull themselves across"
Dukejr01: "Might want to get bck into cover Dawn and Vance."
Missiledine: you can hear the ratcheting sound again
Docportal: I return back with corren is.
Missiledine: ok
Dawn12: ok
Dukejr01: Corren will grab Dawnand pull her back.
Missiledine: "it be bloody hard to get a boat daun yon steps in one piece." Rolb says
Dukejr01: "I could cross on the rope. without a light the archer would have a hard time seeing me. I could carry a couple magiclly lighted coins for when I get tothe other side.
Missiledine: "Are ye a good swimmer lad?"
Dukejr01: "Not in armour." Corren grins.
Missiledine: "With yer fine dwarven arrmor an all."
Missiledine: "As soon as yon bastards see that rope a jerkin abot, they'll cut it as sure as death."
Dukejr01: "which way is the shaft with the rope up top? would that lead down to cross the water?
Missiledine: hard to judge, but it could be somewhere ahead of you
Dukejr01: Corren nods.
Docportal: Watch for more bandit from up the stairway.
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: I am not finding he magic stuff we got from last split, seems to me that there were potions.
Missiledine: <Healing, Invisibility, and Sleep>
Docportal: <yes there were.>
Dukejr01: right,. jsut found it.
Dukejr01: okay that is no help
Missiledine: <me too>
Dukejr01: "okay. we can shoot arrows over there with light on them to see what is there. we can try swimming. we could go back upstairs and climb dow nteh rope."
Dukejr01: "Could try talking."
Missiledine: "Talking?" Rolb laughs, "You?"
Dukejr01: Corren snorts. "Yah. I plan to stick a sword in the gizzerd of the guy who put a hole in my nice new breastplate.
Missiledine: Rolb peers around the corner "I dunno think yer blade is long enough fer that lad."
Missiledine: the ratcheting has stopped
Dukejr01: "some blades are longer thn others...." corren grins.
Dukejr01: "I am thinking that the shaft with the rope is the way to go"
Docportal: I will stay here.
Missiledine: ok, Finn will stay with you
Dukejr01: Corren goes up the stairs.
Missiledine: Rolb will go with Corren. Dawn?
Dawn12: sure i will go
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: Corren hustles up
Dawn12: dawn follows
Docportal: I put my lite sword up and pull out my other.
Missiledine: about halfway up you see the glow of a light ahead of you in the tunnel. Can't see the source yet
Dukejr01: Corren stuffs his torch and waits with sword drawn.
Missiledine: you hear a voice call, "I saw a light!" Then that one goes out
Dukejr01: douse all light.
Dawn12: dawn get her sword ready
Missiledine: ok
Missiledine: I hear posts, but I don't se anything
Dukejr01: Corren crouches. blade ready to strike. he barely breathes.
Dukejr01: is there room to use a sword here or is it knife work?
Missiledine: tight for a broadsword
Dukejr01: minuses to hit?
Missiledine: thrusting only, minuses to parry
Dukejr01: would a knife be better? we are at a disadvantage because of lower level
Missiledine: Several long seconds pass... a voice calls "Who's down there?"
Dukejr01: I saw you Dawn
Missiledine: <Yes it would be easier to use>
Dukejr01: recognize the voice?
Missiledine: no
Dawn12: dawn tryes to put her sword up and knife out
Missiledine: <Dawn, I don't see your post.>
Missiledine: now I do
Dukejr01: Dawn, Jim cannot see you. try shutting down AIM and rebooting it.
Dukejr01: nevermind
Dukejr01: weird.
Dukejr01: Corren stays with sword.
Missiledine: <Yes it is strange>
Missiledine: ok Dawn, you switch weapons
Dukejr01: Corren takes a step up. a quiet as a mouse.
Missiledine: from the faint whispers, shuffling and breathing, you would judge there to be three to five up there
Missiledine: The voice calls again, "Who is down there?"
Dukejr01: can we estimate how far ahead the voice is?
Missiledine: maybe twenty five or thirty feet
Missiledine: "Answer me or... we'll wall you up in here and leave you to rot!"
Dukejr01: Corren eases back to Dawn and Rolb. "Tough fight this, will be." he whispers into Dawn's ear. "Put a hand in my belt. and follow me up. Cast a light spell on this coin" Corren has a coin under his cloak where it can;t be seen. he
Dukejr01: will hold it in his gloved palm.
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: "Then prepare your sleep spell, toss it on the guy behind the one I am fighting. okay?"
Missiledine: "Last chance!"
Dukejr01: Corren will repeat his plan fro rolb. whispering in his ear.
Dawn12: Dawn cast light spell on the coin and holds on to corren belt
Missiledine: Rolb nods
Dukejr01: Corren will then go up the stairs on step at a time.
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: Corren uses his knife.
Dukejr01: no shield
Dawn12: prepare sleep spell
Missiledine: you hear a voice hiss, "They're coming!" Suddenly there is light ahead, steady and bright, but not magical... a hooded lantern, being held in freont of a dimly seen figure with an extended sword blade visible in the light
Dukejr01: Corren goes after him. tossing the light coin ahead of him.
Dukejr01: room to use a shield here?
Missiledine: behind him, further up the steps is another figure and another beyond that
Dawn12: dawn cast the sleep spellon the man behind the man corren is fighting
Missiledine: no, no shields
Dukejr01: k. knife work it is.
Dukejr01: regular attack, nothing fancy. he will tryto get into close combat.
Missiledine: Okay... Dawn, as best you can tell your spell went off properly, but the target seems unaffected... Corren as you come up the stairs, your man keep the sword and lantern between you and him
Dukejr01: can get knife into play?
Missiledine: I f your willing to brave the sword and the hot metal
Dawn12: dawn gets her knife ready
Dukejr01: uh. yes.
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: Corren has little exposed flesh.
Missiledine: He will thrust at you as you close... the blade glances off your breast plate, but he keeps the lantern in your face, much as one would use a small buckler
Dukejr01: k. go in close combat. knife in his ribs.
Missiledine: you stab and pass his guard, feel the blade scrape across his armor, feels like mail under his clothing.
Missiledine: He thrusts the hot metal of the lantern against your face, forcing you to twist your head aside to avoid being burned, and he tries, ineffectually, to club you with the hilt of his sword
Dukejr01: Next round , all out attack with knife. singel attack for extra damage.
Dawn12: dawn cast shield on me and cast daze on the man behind the on e corren is fighting
Missiledine: you are in close now, and his sword is useless... you stab again... again the armor turns the blade.. he drops his sword and slams the lantern into your back and helmet.. you hear glass breaking and feel something wet on the back
Missiledine: of your neck, but take no damage
Dukejr01: crap
Dukejr01: does he have a helmet?
Missiledine: yes, morion type
Missiledine: ok Dawn
Dukejr01: Corren stabs upward toward under his jaw.
Dukejr01: anyhting much I can do about the lite lantern that is about to immolate me?
Missiledine: The man you are on Corren, stumbles backwards, falling, he has his hand in your cloak and is pulling you with him as you attack
Missiledine: no, not really, it is behind you
Missiledine: your back
Dukejr01: k
Dukejr01: okay. nevermind hte stab. knee him in the balls.
Dukejr01: "Sorry about this, fellow"
Missiledine: you hit ... the man gurgles and you feel a spray of blood on your face... hard to say how bad you hurt him tho
Dukejr01: oh. too late
Missiledine: <tto late>
Dukejr01: Corren gets a leg under him and goes after the next in line
Missiledine: he does not let go and suddenly your cloak is aflame as is your helmet and neck and hair!
Dawn12: dawn cast shape fire and move it to the man in front of corren
Dukejr01: Corren stabs him again,
Missiledine: the Daze did not seem to work on him, but he is stepping smartly back to avoid the fiery fate of Corren... when you cast the Shaope Fire, it leaps out at him and you hear him curse and see him stumble back. His cloak opens to
Missiledine: reveal plate armor underneath.. The cloak is aflame as well
Dukejr01: Corren drops his sword and fastdraws his sword
Missiledine: eh?
Dukejr01: oops, drops his knife.
Docportal has left the room.
Missiledine: you are on fire Corren, basicly from the middle of your back up
Dukejr01: the shape fire didn;t help?
Dukejr01: okay. slash off the cloak.
Missiledine: yes, it spread it to the other man, but you are still burning... the oil soaked cloth is in full glow
Dukejr01: k. slash off the cloak.
Dawn12 has left the room.
Dukejr01: I am thinking that corren won;t drop the cloak just yet. if he is not in pain yet. he is going to take advantage of the other guy's surprise.
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: <sigh. these guys are probably Hauscarls and we are going to end up outlaws>
Missiledine: the cloak is still burning, but your armor is protecting you, so far, from the worst of the effects
Dukejr01: cool. Corren goes after the plate mailed guy
Missiledine: the man under you is still alive and he still has a grip on you
Dukejr01: oh. knee him in the balls then
Missiledine: the plate mail guy is ripping off HIS cloak!
Missiledine: he has a grip on your off arm and a handful of your cloak
Dukejr01: "I don;t have time for you." Corren grunts. he all out attacks twice.
Missiledine: you knee him, but it doesn't hit where you intended, betting his thigh instead... he does not let go... he is gurgling and soaking you in blood!
Missiledine: with?
Dukejr01: knife
Missiledine: dropped it
Dukejr01: oh yes. have sword?
Dukejr01: <poor bastard, sure hope he is a bad guy>
Missiledine: yes, but there isn't any room to swing or thrust
Dukejr01: <sigh>
Dukejr01: how much room do I have?
Dukejr01: Strike his face with the pommel.
Missiledine: you are almost chest to chest, in a near prone posistion
Dukejr01: <shoulda kept the knife>
Missiledine: you hit him and he grunts and gurgles, one hand loosens, but he still has you by the off arm
Dukejr01: <this guy is as stubborn as Corren!>
Dukejr01: hit him again.
Missiledine: Something flaming passes above you... the second mans's now flaming cloak, hurled fulll in Dawn's face!
Missiledine: You hit him again and he sighs, his grip loosening.. just as you hit him, you are kicked in the head by an armored boot from the man above you!
Dukejr01: "Arrrg!"
Missiledine: The blow is powerful and though your helmet absorbs much of it, you are still stunned and take 3 points! You can hear Dawn cry out in pain and surprise from behind you
Dukejr01: holy frejoles!
Dukejr01: that is one bad boot
Dukejr01: Corren will Defend next round
Missiledine: Above you the armored man calls, "Back! Get back! We need room to fight!" He is retreating up the steps, drawing his sword
Dukejr01: Corren will clear his head and go after him. is the voice recognizable?
Missiledine: I thinbk this is a place to stop... anymore will get too involved
Dukejr01: k
