Redlun XXXIII
Missiledine: I am ready, are you?
Dukejr01: yep
Missiledine: Ok, since Troy is not here I do not want to move onto the actual attack on the smugglers, if that is all right with you....
Missiledine: what I would like to do is address the refugee issue and any other prep stuff you want to do in regards to the upcoming action
Dukejr01: np. A has plenty to keep him occupied, settling people and getttin a force together.
Dukejr01: right
Dukejr01: great minds
Missiledine: of course
Dukejr01: so what is our excuse?
Dukejr01: :-D
Missiledine: Ha!
Missiledine: Okay... when we broke you were leading the refugees towards the cavalry stable and discussing with Gallus the food situation
Missiledine: You don't need to go into the minutia of set up, that is your stewards job, but
Dukejr01: right. food is good. A is going to store extra food next harvest.
Missiledine: If you want to avoid tapping your stored food, YOU need to authorize slaughtering a couple extra head of sheep etc
Dukejr01: Gallus could use an assistant.
Missiledine: true
Dukejr01: he should keep an eye out for someone likely.
Missiledine: slaughtering livestock is a long term expense vs the short term use of stored foods
Dukejr01: allright. We COULD catch a few wild cattle and goats to make up for loses. but we don;'t have time for an expeduition right now. But needs must. so
lets slaughter some of the less favualble animals.
Dukejr01: valuable
Missiledine: your herdsmen will have already culled, or earmarked for culling, the ones most suitable, so the three or four animals you kill now are
ones that would be breeding stock or wool and dairy animals
Missiledine: taking earmarked animals is the same as taking stored food, they have already been calculated into the food budget, they are just
easier to leave alive in a world without freezeras
Dukejr01: I see. lets take stored food for now and see if we can rustle up some dinner on the hoof later to supplement stores. if the raid doesn't pan out any food,
we can sell some ofthe horses we captured and buy some food
Dukejr01: if we need to we can slaughter later
Missiledine: ok... Gallus will see to it. He will plan a good feed for 100
Missiledine: +/-
Dukejr01: good. Athamar discusses the pros and cons of letting htem settle here. A wants to find out if any are serfs and he is especially interested in what made
them run the gauntlet to get away
Dukejr01: if they are freemen, they can come and go as they chose..... but if they are serfs, then legal complications arise
Missiledine: He has the tents brought out and has fires built in the moor near the Stables, planning on keeping everything right in that area
Dukejr01: good idea
Dukejr01: A will want to talk to them after they have calmed down and gotten somethign to eat. so he leaves them alone for awhile.
Missiledine: Once everything is in motion, Gallus will step aside with you to talk while keeping an eye on the proceedings
Missiledine: "My Lord, this could be an enormous windfall!"
Dukejr01: "Things aren't boring around here...." Athamr comments
Dukejr01: "Yes. I am interested in knowing what made them take such a risk - and why they needed to."
Missiledine: "Even if they are serfs," Gallus murmurs "Depending on what occured, there is precedent..."
Dukejr01: Athamar grunts. "They were worried that because I was the King's man, that I would "send them back". Curious, they seemed to think the Duke's men
would not"
Missiledine: "Perhaps, My Lord, while you talk to the leaders, Ollyn and I and Miklas and Jacinta can circulate through their ranks and see what we
can learn, to see if the stories all match."
Dukejr01: "Good idea. If they are genuine... we should see what would make them want to stay. they are nervous of me.... hmmm."
Missiledine: "Well, perhaps that is because the River March and all the manors and lands there are of Royal Demise. They may have felt that by
dealing with the Duke they insulate themselves with another layer of beauracracy."
Missiledine:
Dukejr01:
Missiledine:
Dukejr01:
Missiledine: lol
Missiledine: As the food begins to cook and the tents are set up, the families are settling in as comfoortably as possible in the stables and the
area around it
Dukejr01: Athamar nods. "Bad things happening in the Rivermarch. We need to find out more and be prepared for the worst. When we have dealt with the
smugglers, some scouting to the west is in order."
Missiledine: You and Gallus see Tegus standing rather nervously waiting your attention
Dukejr01: Is he close enough to hear?
Missiledine: no, he is politely awaiting your summons
Dukejr01: okay. Athamr lets him stew
Dukejr01: "Where are we going to put them all?"
Dukejr01: How frozen is the ground in winter here? can A do any Earth spell construction?
Missiledine: "Yes," Says Gallus. "Once we get our feet under us, the King will want us to send a draft to the River March unless I'm badly
mistaken."
Missiledine: I would think so, you might need to wait for a warm day vs a really cold one
Missiledine: "It may be time to put the energy into enlarging the village."
Dukejr01: k. We do construction here in the north plains in winter. but the footings need to be dug before the ground freezes.
Missiledine:
Dukejr01: Athamar nods. "Big project. keep me busy til spring. Still we will have a lot of hands to help. laying new streets andpaving them in the village might be
worthwhile."
Dukejr01:
Missiledine:
Dukejr01: lol
Missiledine:
Dukejr01: "The villagers wil lbe curious as to what is going on... that reminds me, we need to get a sound tactical plan ready for the village and the manor in case of
attack. I was a little worried that this group might have been one."
Dukejr01:
Missiledine: "Yes, that would have been a bit embarassing."
Missiledine:
Dukejr01 wants to send file Athamar.txt.
Missiledine received c:\download\Missiledine\Athamar.txt.
Dukejr01: "Do you need an assistant? Maybe someone to help with the books."
Missiledine: "We have enough mouths to feed now!"
Missiledine: "Perhaps I can train one of the young ones for the job, then after you and I are dust, Tassiter, or your heir, will have someone to fill my
role."
Dukejr01: Athamar nods. "Don;t want to drive you to an early grave, you know."
Missiledine: Gallus laughs, "I have a few more miles in me."
Missiledine: "Do you want to put yon Tegus out of his misery now?"
Dukejr01: Athamar grins in return. "Oh, I suppose." Athamar finds a comfortable spot to do the interview. comfortable for him that is.
Missiledine: A number of benches and the like have been brought out, Gallus snags one of those for you, he waves Miklas over to stand behind
you and look grim.
Dukejr01: 8-)
Dukejr01: Athamar ponders a dinnertime joke about that
Missiledine: Once you are settled and at a nod from you, Gallus signals Tegus to approach. The man does, slowly and hesitantly, hat in hand
Missiledine: "My Lord." He bows
Dukejr01: Athamar studies him a bit, nods. "Tell me, Tegus, are you a free man?"
Missiledine: "Yes My Lord, I am. But not all of us are."
Dukejr01: "I see. You served in the militia, then."
Missiledine: "That is why they asked me to speak for them, if you understand."
Dukejr01: Athamr nods at that.
Missiledine: "Yes, My Lord, we all did."
Dukejr01: "All?"
Missiledine: "Even the serfs were called upon to fight in the March. That's how it came to happen, My Lord."
Dukejr01: "What came to happen?"
Missiledine: "As I'm sure you know my Lord, Serfs are only suppose to be in the Spear Levy in time of emergency and in defense of our homes
and our Lord's property... But they kept taking all the men to fight up and down the March, My Lord. And when we were off fighting they'd come
and burn us out, steal our livestock, slaughter our families.... We begged our Lord to leave the Levy, but he refused. Three times My Lord! Three
times we were burned out! And our Lord still called us away!"
Dukejr01: "Who was you Lord?"
Dukejr01:
Missiledine: "Baron Garial, My Lord."
Missiledine: "Begging your pardon my Lord, But even serfs have the right to expect their Lord to protect them!"
Dukejr01: Athamar frowns slightly, not at his words, but at the truth in that.
Missiledine: "We can't live like that My Lord, our families aren't safe! They've stolen children and raped and...' HE trails off
Dukejr01: "How long have you traveled?"
Missiledine: "Three, no four weeks My Lord. We couldn't come down the river, the Barons would have turned us back. We crossed the river and
cut across the mountains."
Missiledine: "It was hard going My Lord, we were attacked once, but most of the Goblins were away attacking the March proper, so we
squeezed through with Mitra's Aid!"
Missiledine: "Please My Lord, don't send us back!"
Dukejr01: Athamr says more quietly, "Do you know of any other groups like yours that may be trying the same route?
Missiledine: "Not that I know of, My Lord. We had a big meeting, secret you understand, some decided to come with us, many decided to stay,
saying it was too risky to try the mountains."
Missiledine: 'We lost, many, on the trip." He adds quietly
Dukejr01: Athamar nods. "I am sorry for your loss."
Dukejr01: Athamar steeples his fingers and thinks a moment.
Missiledine: "Please My Lord, understand, we are not cowards! We are not afraid to fight! But let us fight for our famlies!"
Dukejr01: Athamar looks up at im and casts Truthsayer to detect whether he has spoken a lie in the last 5 minutes.
Missiledine: You detect no lies
Dukejr01: Athamar grunts. "You have told me the truth." Athamr sighs a bit, "I will not send you back, I give you my Word. I must think about what I am to do with
you...."
Missiledine: "Thank you my Lord, Thank you! We would be happy to serve you to the best of our ability, My Lord!"
Dukejr01: Athamar smiles. "Get some rest, see to your families. I will want to know more about the March in time."
Dukejr01: Athamar dismisses him
Missiledine: He bows his way back, then hurries into the crowd that anxiously awaits his words.. They crowd around him listening
Dukejr01: Athamar chats with his people to confirm the story.
Missiledine: Basicly everyone has heard the same thing, the details vary a bit in their grusomeness, but they are consistent
Dukejr01: Athamar is clearly troubled by all this.
Missiledine: From what you can gather they lost at least 70 people on the trip
Dukejr01: "Well, Gallus, what about these precedents you mentioned?
Dukejr01: "Mitra!"
Dukejr01: Athamar seldom swears, btw
Missiledine: "Hmmm, well, is a Lord has failed to provide for his people, and they have made a proper attempt to express their grievences and
seek redress, a serf who has been treated unjustly may seek a new Lord. The new Lord must be prepared to argue his case before the
damaged Lord's superior. In this case, you will have to petition the King."
Missiledine: "This is not one serf and his family, this is an entire village, I don't know if there is a precedent for that!"
Dukejr01: "Right. I can see that go really wrong. the Rivermarch is the King's project, and Baron Gariel will become an enemy...." Athamar squeezes the bridge of
his nose."
Missiledine: "It is difficult to avoid making enemies." Gallus says mildly
Missiledine: mildly
Dukejr01: "Hmmm.... The ramifications are enourmous...." Athamar isn;t too concerned about making enemies.
Missiledine: "The River March is a project of the King's, but he is known to be a fair man."
Dukejr01: "Well, do we ned to petition right away? I would like to clean out the smugglers first."
Dukejr01: "Aye. Perhaps the King would be interested in Tegus' story. Its not something the Baron's of Rivermarch are likely to mention."
Missiledine: "I would wait a bit, Baron Garial clearly doesn't know what became of them, or he'd have caught them by now."
Dukejr01: "I would assume them dead."
Dukejr01: "Gariel.... I am going to remember that name."
Missiledine: "Eventually word will get around. I suspect that the Baron will try and work it out with you first, then he'll petition the King for their return."
Missiledine: "You can't keep the doubling of the village a secret for long."
Missiledine: "The next traveling tinker or merchant will start spreading the word... To say nothing of the Friar..." Gallus adds thoughtfully as he
stares across the field. Looking that way you see the old Friar and his young aid moving amongst the refugees, talking and smiling. He is
working his way towards you
Dukejr01: Athamar grins. "Well, if it comes right down to it and the petition goes wrong, someone could point down the road east and mention that Oakhall is
Church land. But you didn't hear me say that."
Dukejr01: Athamar goes to the Friar in deference to his old bones.
Missiledine: "My Lord! Is it true that all these children crossed the mountains in winter, with them thick with Goblins and Ogres."
Missiledine: The old man has his hand on the shoulder of a child
Dukejr01: Athamar nods "Yes. They tell a harrowing tale." Athamar grins at the kid. he is going to have to remember to keep some sweet in his pocket for just such
emergencies.
Dukejr01: well, maybe not grin,.
Missiledine: "What is to become of them My Lord?" The Friar asks urgently
Dukejr01: "I will have to petition the King on behalf of the serfs. The freemen can come and go as they chose. That is, if they elect to remain here. "
Missiledine: A lot of people are standing listening to your words, there are many smiles, but some fear as well
Missiledine: "I shall send to the Abbot and tell him of our need for Alms for the winter! There are many mouths to feed and much work to be done
to house these good people." The Friar looks the crowd over, you can see him counting heads. You notice that there are many of your villagers
now moving through the crowd, talking quietly, sharing food and drink
Dukejr01: "That is very good of you, Friar. You can be assured that I will do my best to provide. The village is going to grow larger this winter. There is much to be
done."
Missiledine: "I shall write immediately! Perhaps one of your men might carry the letter?"
Dukejr01: "Of course."
Missiledine: Nodding to you the old man totters off to the chapel accompanied by the young Monk.
Missiledine: You hear Gallus murmur, "The food is a blessing, but that will put the fat in the fire right quick."
Dukejr01: Athamar winces. "Hadn;'t thought of that. Well, I can't exactly tell the Friar 'No'. "
Missiledine: "True, and its not like the letter will reasonably be lost on the road. Ah well, nothing for it."
Missiledine: As Gallus walks away to tend something you hear him murmur an old proverb/prayer "We Thank you Mitra, for the Blessing that is
the Church."
Dukejr01: Athamar goes to pen a short missive to go along to the Abbot thanking him for the knife. he will send some wine along as well.
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: have we send the wagon back?
Missiledine: not yet
Dukejr01: I considered writing a letter of explanation to the Abbot. but I am not sure that is proper
Dukejr01: send both at the same time.
Missiledine:
Dukejr01: lol! Cruel!
Dukejr01: actually, yes
Missiledine:
Missiledine: :-D
Dukejr01: heh heh. A sends two men for safety.
Missiledine: J and anyone in particular?
Dukejr01: She can chose her partner.
Missiledine:
Missiledine: About an hour later the Monk will deliver the Friar's letter to the Manor House
Dukejr01: "Jacinta, take these missives to the Abbot and return the wagon to Windhook. Make sure that the wine that I am sending along to the Abbot and
Windhook are loaded. Take someone with you."
Missiledine:
Dukejr01: "Very good, . thank the Friar for me"
Missiledine: He bows and leaves
Dukejr01:
Missiledine:
Dukejr01:
Missiledine: lol
Dukejr01:
Missiledine: Jacinta will arrange the wagon, cargo and escort.. Then will depart
Dukejr01: okay. next is getting the expedition organized.
Missiledine: Outside everything settles down and seems relatively normal....
Missiledine: right
Dukejr01: Athamar goes up to the battelement for a look around.
Missiledine: what are you looking for?
Dukejr01: just looking. he has a lot to think about and the shit never ends.
Missiledine: :-D
Missiledine: It's good to be Lord!
Dukejr01: He goes back inside after a half hour or so.
Dukejr01: is three any more information to be squeezed from the prisoner?
Dukejr01: yes there is, call signs. typical guard shifts. weapons and training...
Missiledine: A couple questions you need to decide on.... Who are you taking on the expedition out of your men at arms. Are you taking Militia?
Are you going to take any of the new men?
Dukejr01: good question. A would like to stay mounted. right now we have 11 horses, if any of the new horses can be ridable soon, we will take more men. likely,
A will simply call for volunteers. offer then regular pay for the duration - about $100 a week, and a shareof loot.
Dukejr01: so if any new men volunteer, that is fine
Missiledine: You can learn that there are seven camoflauged guard posts, similar to the one you stumbled on, in a crescent around the base,
running from cliff edge to cliff edge. The main base is underground but there is a low two story tower like affair that guards the tunnel entrance
Dukejr01: on the other hand. if we DON:T have enough horses, we are going to be afoot anyway, so A will decide then.
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: are the guard posts connected to eachother or to a tunnel sytem?
Dukejr01: system?
Missiledine: the guards are on a six hour rotation, give or take, and there seems to be no routine call signs
Missiledine: no, they are not connected in any fashion
Dukejr01: Athamar will try to sketch out the layout based on what he pulls from the prisoners mind.
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: whatis in the tower? how many and do they have any siege weapons?
Dukejr01: does the tower hae a roof?
Missiledine: the guard posts are selected for visibility and inaccessibility. The areas between are thick with traps
Dukejr01:
Missiledine: yes there is a roof. The first floor is one big chamber with double doors out and an iron gate opposite going down into the lower
complex. The second floor is two rooms and has a number of murder holes accessing the lower room. There are no windows on the first floor,
but archery/crossbow slots on the second
Dukejr01: ouch. hmmmm
Missiledine: The desert is visible from the roof. and there is always lookouts watching the desert and the valley area
Missiledine: there is a trap door from the roof to the second
Missiledine: floor
Dukejr01: that is VERY interesting. :-)
Dukejr01: Athamar writes down everything he learns . makes sketches.
Missiledine: entering the tunnel going down, there is a second set of gates about forty feet down. They open onto a large receiving area for
animals, cargo etc
Dukejr01: he uses his Intelligence Analysis. tho he isn't very good at it
Dukejr01: k. simple but effective
Dukejr01: if we don't achieve total surpise, we ar in for a hard slog
Missiledine: from there several passages exit. One is another ramp that descends a long, winding way to the desert floor. There are several guard
posts and gates along the way. At the bottom there is another large cave that is a stables foir the desert horses etc
Missiledine: Other passages exit the main room to the slave pens, the barracks/living areas, store rooms, latrine and an underground pool
Dukejr01: a;; separate?
Dukejr01: pardon
Missiledine: yes
Dukejr01: neat. be interesting to garrison this place... hmmm...
Missiledine: 6 exits all together, well 7 if you count the entrance
Missiledine: The living area has several branching tunnels with two large barracks and about a dozen smaller chambers for families and another
tunnel leading to the Boss' rooms. That has its own gate and no one is allowed down there
Dukejr01: betcha he has his own way out.
Dukejr01: I am more interested than ever in talking to the Duke of Biship who cleaned this place out before.
Missiledine: the store rooms are divided into three chambers, one for stuff to feed the garrison, one for trade goods that need to be set aside and
one that is locked
Dukejr01: in fact. that might be the only way.
Missiledine: access to that is restricted
Dukejr01: hmmm....
Missiledine: Assuming it is the same place
Dukejr01: yeah. how many secret underground passages to the desert floor can there possibly be?
Dukejr01: oh yeah. there are at least a dozen
Missiledine: the slave pens consist of several large cells and a couple singles
Missiledine: lol
Dukejr01: okay. is it proper to go talk to Lord Boma about a joint expedition, or do I need to talk to the Baron first?
Missiledine: armor and weapons run the gamet from simple leather to scale, scain etc... Each to the individuals taste and budget.... Spears and
crossbows for the poorset, swords, axes, scimitars etc are also common
Missiledine: you can talk to Boma, but he will need the Baron's permission. Since you are not the Baron's man you are free to go either way
Dukejr01: No harm in having a chat with him about it. put our heads together, see if he is interested.
Missiledine: That is about all your gonna get out of this guy... He is not a major player
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: k. Athamar will Entomb him under the cell once he is done with him. to save having to guard him. let him have a bath first
Missiledine: lol, ok
Missiledine: 'NOOoooooooooooo!
Dukejr01: or give him water to clean himself
Dukejr01: "It won't hurt a bit."
Dukejr01:
Dukejr01:
Missiledine: lol
Dukejr01:
Missiledine: even Velitar scum stay fairly clean, maybe not by 20th century standards
Missiledine: its a hold over from the Death
Dukejr01: lol
Missiledine: that's why most towns have a public bath
Dukejr01: yeah. been playing that with corren. though he is fairly fastidius.
Missiledine: true
Dukejr01: gotta build a bath in Redlun. maybe a sauna/bath/pool in the basement of the manor too
Dukejr01: wel, that is next year's project. maybe
Missiledine:
Dukejr01: k.
Dukejr01: great. A goes to bed
Dukejr01: wow. we get more done in a couple hours than some players get done in a couple sessions.
Missiledine: lol
Missiledine: I am going to pack it in here soon tho
Dukejr01: k
Missiledine: make an early night of it for a change
Dukejr01: on for tues/thurs next week?
Missiledine: yep
Dukejr01: k
Missiledine: Doc asked me that earlier
Dukejr01: hmmm
Missiledine: yes
Dukejr01: will he ever learn? I doubt
Missiledine: Nah...
Dukejr01: I wonder if they realize how littel damage they did those skeletons
Missiledine: I will try and upload that session and a bunch of other stuff tomorrow... I doubt it
Missiledine: will be adding updated Alchemy section, that's the thing that is holding me up right now
Dukejr01: cool
Missiledine: otherwise I'd have uploaded tonight
Missiledine: anyway... I am off... Catch you over the weekend?
Missiledine: maybe Sunday?
Dukejr01: sure. I will be around
Missiledine: ok, good night then
Dukejr01: night, thanks
