Redlun XXV
Missiledine: ok gents, let us begin!
Missiledine: when we ended, everyone was home, safe and sound, from the Drunmore shopping trip...
Missiledine: the mercs, families, horses and apprentice are all bedded down and or settled in
Missiledine: what, if anything, would you like to do? Realisticly speaking that is...
Dukejr01: Athamar is quite pleased with the Gallus et al.
tacit01: <while visions of sugar plums ...>
Missiledine: of course... couldn't have done better yourself
Dukejr01: Well, the obvious is fit the Lamellar to the new mercs.
Missiledine: ok
Missiledine: that will take a couple days each
Dukejr01: And I suppose the next order of business is Athamar will explore the local countryside.
Dukejr01: Gallus is going to see to getting the merc/farmers getting winter clothes, and arrange fdor them to
Dukejr01: have land to farm next spring. that intails talking to the farming head guy
Missiledine: ok...east of you, down the road some miles, is Oakhall, the manors and feifs associated with the
Missiledine: Baron and the monastary
Missiledine: ok, land can be allocated
Dukejr01: okay. lets explore down that way first. get lay of land, look for best ambush sites.
Missiledine: ...so exploration in that direction is somewhat limited
Dukejr01: gotcha
Dukejr01: the plan is to grid off areas and survey them. A should get a proper survey done.
tacit01: plenty off room to expand going west!
Missiledine: south of you is barren, rocky hills with the valleys filled with tanglked woods of scrub trees and
Dukejr01: lol. yes, if the King allows.
Missiledine: thorns. Until you reach the cliffs over looking the desert, some 30 to 40 miles away
Missiledine: north is forest, Boma and the river
Dukejr01: is there anything south of Oakhall? or do they expand to the cliff?
Missiledine: west is forest, hills and eventually, some 40 to 50 miles, the Mondolaith Mts.
Missiledine: south and east of Oakhall is the southern most village of the Barony, Windhook. After that its
Missiledine: 15 miles to the cliffs
Dukejr01: okay. that is good. settled land will not spawn raiders. I think explore South first. check out those
Dukejr01: barren hills
Missiledine: mostly empty lands. Not good for farming, though there are herders who run goats down that way
Dukejr01: bring machetes?
Missiledine: as opposed to swords?
Dukejr01: to cut brambles
Dukejr01: I didn't mean to put hte "?" in that
Dukejr01: or axes will do, we have lots of them
Missiledine: well, it is winter and you can stick to the high ground and avoid the worst of it
Dukejr01: okay
Dukejr01: that sounds better
Missiledine: who is going? How many? Walking or riding or both?
Dukejr01: both. take two riding horses and a draft horse or two to carry stuff. take the tent. umm...
Dukejr01: I think 6 men will do.
Missiledine: ok
Missiledine: how many days are you going to be gone? Which 6?
Dukejr01: oh, I would say 4 days. lets take... Jacinta. miklas and whomever Ollyn decides.
Missiledine: Ollyn going to?
Missiledine: 6 plus you? or 6 with you?
Dukejr01: A would like an experienced fighting man he trusts to stay in REdlun so he can stay
Dukejr01: 6 plus me
Missiledine: ok.. hang on, phone
Missiledine: sorry, real world shit
tacit01: I hope not on the carpet
Dukejr01: easier to clean up than the liquid kind
Missiledine: ok.. you will set out with Athamar, Jacinta, Miklas and four of your new men..
Missiledine: uhmm.. that was strange
Dukejr01: great. I get all the least experienced.
Dukejr01: :-)
tacit01: what was strange?
Missiledine: I typed a paragraph and hit enter.. I get a message that it was too long and was not recieved
Dukejr01: weird
Missiledine: oh well
Dukejr01: Did I mention that AOL sucks?
Missiledine: lol
tacit01: I had that earlier, too "message too long or too complex" or something like that
Dukejr01: AOL is for 5th grade comprehension, sorta like the USA Today
Missiledine: Your new men need to gain experience somewhere... where better then the field of battle..
Missiledine: lol
tacit01: or the field of sheep dung
Missiledine: whatever
Missiledine: ok.. you set out in the early morning... who is riding vs walking?
Dukejr01: yup. i don't mind. the old guys are peobably relieved they cans stay in their nicve warm beds
Dukejr01: Athamar will start out walking, but will have one of the horses for his use. the other horse is for
Dukejr01: scout to range out a bit.
Dukejr01: Jacinta is good at that.... :-)
tacit01: :-)
Missiledine: you head south out of the manor. It isn't long before the terrain roughens and the land becomes
Dukejr01: A will be alternating walking and riding. he needsthe excercise.
Missiledine: rather bleak and barren
Dukejr01: is there some usable acreage south that is not part of Redlun?
Missiledine: the whole day is spent following the natural paths of least resistence.. Though the countryside is
Missiledine: stark, you do see a fair amount of wildlife. Deer, wild goats, pigs and even wild cattle
Missiledine: only for grazing.. the land here is to rough and rocky, the soil is poor and flinty
Dukejr01: if anyone wants to take a shot at dinner, they are free to do so.
Missiledine: Miklas says, "We could come back here with ropes and horses and add some cattle to our herds."
tacit01: J has bow skill; she'll try
Missiledine: for what?
Dukejr01: "Good idea! good springtime project too... Buy you a beer for that."
Missiledine: mounted or dismounted?
tacit01: goat or pig; dismounted
Dukejr01: <Athamar treats Miklas sorta like a cousin.>
Dukejr01: wild pigs are dangerous
Dukejr01: gonna need a boar spear.
tacit01: fine, goat
Missiledine: ok... The game is slightly wary, which makes you think they have been hunted, but not extensively.
tacit01: J is patient...
Missiledine: spotting a likely looking group, you dismount and try and work your way in close enough for a shot...
Missiledine: taking careful aim... you shoot and...
Missiledine: hit it!
Dukejr01: <woohoo!>
Missiledine: It goes down with a squeal, the others scatter
Dukejr01: While Athamar is waiting for our brave hunter he casts Seek Earth. looking for silver>
tacit01: approach with knife out, ready to slit it's throat if it's still alive
Missiledine: it is..
Dukejr01: <its... a Weregoat! Lookout!>
tacit01: J puts it out of it's misery
Missiledine: You don't detect any significant amounts
Dukejr01: okay
Dukejr01: yay. lunch is taken care of.
Dukejr01: continue on
Missiledine: one of the men will help you gut and prep the goat
Missiledine: more like supper
Dukejr01: okay.
Missiledine: you move on, the valleys are not impassable, but the vegetation down in them tends to have
Missiledine: long, nasty thorns. Making the hillsides easier to move on
Dukejr01: look around for places where raiders migh camp with cover. paths etc.
Dukejr01: also look for water
Missiledine: there are few streams and those you do find tend to flom north
Missiledine: flow
Dukejr01: okay. toward Redlun. to join the river, I expect.
Missiledine: yep
Missiledine: there are many narrow valleys and gorges that could easily hide small to mid sized groups.
Dukejr01: the main point of all this is to look for such places, we check them out
Missiledine: checking all of them could take months
Dukejr01: okay. check out those on our path
Missiledine: ok... the day continues much like this until the sky starts to darken... where do you want to camp?
Missiledine: up or down?
Dukejr01: find someplace with water. we will use one of those places that bandits could
Dukejr01: use
Missiledine: the men will catherup firewood for cooking the goat ... so, down in a valley
Dukejr01: yep.
Dukejr01: trade vantage point for protection
Missiledine: you can find one where the undergrowth is less dense and a small stream flows through
Dukejr01: sounds good. note high water mark
Missiledine: the fire is started, the meat is cooking, horses tended... No sign of flooding here
Missiledine: Miklas will organise watchs
Dukejr01: okay.
Dukejr01: keep the camp quiet and unobtrusive.
Missiledine: soon supper is served... it is getting dark now.
Dukejr01: feed Bosco some meat and let him galumph around.
Missiledine: it is an overcast night, but not likely to rain. It is damn cold tho
Dukejr01: room for tent?
Missiledine: yeah
Dukejr01: how long does that take to set up?
Missiledine: fifteen minutes
Dukejr01: set it up. warmer for everyone.
Dukejr01: Athamar will use shape earth to form a firepit for better heat. we can heat up cobbles and but them
Missiledine: ok... the camp settles down, all is quiet... everyone except the guards are asleep.
Dukejr01: in a pit inthe tent for heat
Dukejr01: Athamr takes a first watch
Missiledine: The Lord doesn't usually take watches
Dukejr01: well, he has reduced sleep, he will watch teh stars anyway/
Missiledine: thats why he pays soldiers
Dukejr01: the Lord can stay up late if he wants.
Missiledine: so you won't be in the tent?
Dukejr01: not until he goes to sleep
Missiledine: right
Missiledine: sometime after midnight, Miklas wakes you and Jacinta... "The guard heard horses." He explains.
Missiledine: It maybe wild ones, or not."
Dukejr01: Athamar goes to see/hear
tacit01: blink, blink
tacit01: J is up and moving
Dukejr01: he puls on his armour as he goes.
Missiledine: the guard is upslope a bit for observation. It is very quiet, a cold, bitter night with frost...
Dukejr01: A goes to join him. trying to be quiet
Missiledine: He points south. "It came from that direction. A horse whinnying."
Missiledine: Miklas says, "Could be wild. Maybe a Big Tooth got one."
Dukejr01: Athamar listens for awhile.
Missiledine: silence
Dukejr01: "Tomorrow we go that way to see what is up." he says tothe guard "Good job"
Missiledine: cold, dark, midwinter night
Missiledine: back to the tent?
Dukejr01: yup
Dukejr01: midwinter already?
Missiledine: ok, the rest of the night passes quietly...
Missiledine: getting there...
Dukejr01: alright. leftover goat and some mulled wine for breakfast.
Missiledine: yum
Dukejr01: along witht he oatmeal
Dukejr01: mulled wine to warm people up
Dukejr01: we pack the tent, A uses earth spells to cover up the firepit and latrine trench
Missiledine: Ok. Camp is packed and you set out in the directionof the noise...
Dukejr01: just what I was about to say
Missiledine: you will cross over several hills and vales, then, cresting another hill you see below a slightly
Missiledine: wider, grassier valley. There is water here, a small pond. The valley is empty of life other then
Missiledine: a few wild goats
Dukejr01: neat. how big?
Missiledine: descending the slope it is obvious, even to the non trackers, that there were a lot of horses here
Missiledine: not too long ago
Missiledine: maybe two or three acres in extant
Dukejr01: stop and see if they had shoes
Missiledine: you will have to fan out, searching the jumble of tracks.. most of the horses clearly did not
Dukejr01: most? that means there were domesticated horses here?
Missiledine: Jacinta: While examining the ground you notice a ring of blackened stones... a fire pit, near the
tacit01: <ka-ching!>
Dukejr01: right. a firepit was the next thing to look for
Missiledine: water. In this area you see prints of shod horses, and from their configuration there was a picket
Missiledine: line strung between two of the trees
Dukejr01: check out the campsite. any idea how many were here?
Missiledine: you would guess 8 shod horses
tacit01: check the ashes/coals - when was the pit last used?
Dukejr01: are the ashes warm or look rained on?
Missiledine: they are still slightly warm... maybe early this morning
Dukejr01: right we will want to track the domesticated horses.
Missiledine: all the horses seem to have exited the valley headed west
Missiledine: you would guess that there are 25 to 35 unshod horses along with the 8 shod
tacit01: easier said than done - track away!
Missiledine: the herd as a whole is easy to track... there is no sign that the shod and unshod part company
Dukejr01: probably guys catching horses. but we should be sure.
Missiledine: Miklas says, "They can't travel very fast with a herd to tend. If we weren't on foot we'd catch up."
Dukejr01: "We will follow them for a few hours, I expect that they are merely catching wild horses legitimately
Dukejr01: "Such men will know the lay of the land fairly well. would be nice to talk to them. but...
Dukejr01: "It would be even nicer to catch a few horse of our own.... hmmm"
Missiledine: ok.. you trail along easily enough. The path they are following seems to meander a fair bit, but it
Dukejr01: Any horses NOT go with them?
Missiledine: avoids the denser valleys and stays where the herd can move
Dukejr01: generally west?
Missiledine: not that you can tell
Missiledine: yes
Dukejr01: okay. Athamar loses most of his interest in following them. he think they are legitimate.
Dukejr01: Lets find a nice hill to get a look around
Missiledine: do you break off then?
Missiledine: lots of hills... you pick one and climb to the top
Missiledine: As far as you can see is similar countryside. No sign of habitation, people or horses
Dukejr01: yes. break off.
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: doea Athamar have any idea where the previous fiefdom was located?
Missiledine: west of Redlun
Dukejr01: okay.
Dukejr01: wait a minute. they are going WEST?
Missiledine: you continue south? That's right... west
Dukejr01: towards unoccupied territory. I thought they were headed toward Oakhall.
Missiledine: nope, west
Dukejr01: If they are headed west then they are headed toward wilderness. Put miklas and Jacinta on horses
Dukejr01: to scout ahead. we pursue them
Dukejr01: sorry, I misunderstood
Missiledine: no problem
Missiledine: Jacinta, you and Miklas ride on ahead
tacit01: got it
Missiledine: mounted, without the need to tend a herd, you should close the gap quickly. You can't be more than
Missiledine: two hours behind them
Missiledine: how are you procedeing?
Dukejr01: Athamar will lead the foot in a more or less straight line since we don't have to meander as long as
Dukejr01: the scout can keep us on track. don't sihouette ourselves in the skyline
Missiledine: the herds path may meander, but it is the easiest ground to traverse
Dukejr01: okay then
Missiledine: how far ahead are you going Jacinta?
Dukejr01: is there ANYTHING to the west that they could be going to that would make them legitimate
Dukejr01: horse catchers?
Missiledine: not that you know of
tacit01: 1/4 mile ahead, methinks
Missiledine: unless they plan on turning north and going to the Rivermarch. But the closer they get to the mts the
Dukejr01: right. they might be hobgoblins.
Missiledine: riskier the area becomes. It would be safer to go due north and go via the river
Dukejr01: query. do you use long distance mods to the center of an area spell like Stone Rain to calculate
Dukejr01: skill minuses?
Missiledine: if you maintain a quarter mile ahead of the foot party, you won't be closing with the herd
Dukejr01: scout them and see who they are. we will have to attack them at night if they are hobs
Dukejr01: o early morning
Missiledine: based on the center of the target
Missiledine: Miklas says, "Goblins see better at night then we do."
Dukejr01: yes. I know that. when the mage dropped Rain fo Fire on the mage in Girvan, he was some distance from
Dukejr01: them. I was wondering what the skill minuses for that would be
Missiledine: he was right above them
Dukejr01: "Yes. we will see who they are before we decide anything
tacit01: than as far ahead as necessary to find the other party
Missiledine: ok... you will be about three miles ahead of the party when you can hear and smell the horses ahead
tacit01: carefully approach, staying hidden, until I can see the other party
Missiledine: you also hear shouts of "Haw" and "Get a move on!" and what sounds like a crack of a whip now and the
Missiledine: then
tacit01: dismount
Missiledine: in the next vale, you see a line of four riders, in a curve, shooing along a herd of maybe thirty
Missiledine: horses. Ahead, on either flank, is another two riders
tacit01: humans?
Missiledine: two of the four at the rear are leading pack animals
Missiledine: Too far to tell, but its not likely to be Goblins, they rarely ride. Using horses as pack animals and
Missiledine: meat on the hoof
tacit01: heading west?
Missiledine: yep
Missiledine: they look to be wearing some type of leather armor
tacit01: how are they armed/armored? any bows obvious, or glint of metal armor
tacit01: ah
Dukejr01: we are looking at 10?
Missiledine: 8
tacit01: 4, and another 2 on each flank; 2 extra shod horses as pack animals
Missiledine: one of the four in the rear is snapping a long whip to urge the horses along. He isn't actuall
Missiledine: hitting them tho
Dukejr01: gotcha
tacit01: is Miklas with J?
Missiledine: yes
Missiledine: every once inawhile you will hear one of the lead riders on the flank whistle or shout to bunch the
Missiledine: herd up. There is also a dog, some type of herding dog that is running here and there, snapping at
Missiledine: slow horses
tacit01: any forest or other possible refuge in the next few miles the other party might be tarvelling toward?
Missiledine: the forest is still 10 or 12 miles west of here
tacit01: k - to Miklas "you keep an eye on them, I'll report to Athamar. And stay low"
Missiledine: Miklas taps your shoulder and points... one of the lead riders has stopped, is standing in his
Missiledine: stirrups and is looking around intently
tacit01: freeze
Missiledine: he remains like this for a long time, so long that the second rider catches up and stops to talk. He
Missiledine: starts looking around too
Missiledine: after a minute or so, they seat themselves and resume their stations
tacit01: are we upwind?
Dukejr01: <take a bath!>
tacit01: <scrub my back>
Missiledine: the wind is from the heard, you smelled them first
tacit01: k
Dukejr01: <right<
tacit01: lay low for another minute
Missiledine: they continue on.
tacit01: then J will go report to Athamar
Missiledine: ok
Missiledine: Gents, this is a good place to stop
Missiledine: It's late here.
Missiledine: Everyone will know what the situation is and you can plan your action accordingly
tacit01: k - I need to be up early tomorrow anyway
Missiledine: me too
Missiledine: well, good night...
Dukejr01: night
tacit01: thanks for running us - night!
Dukejr01: thanks for running us
Dukejr01 has left the room.
Missiledine: thank you
Missiledine: catch ya later
