"there is a farmhouse a few miles the direction you are traveling,
and on the other side of the road a large tree, in the road the blood will
probably have dried by now, or possibly soaked into the ground. I can't
say I've ever studied the long term behavior of blood left on the ground..."

He listens to your explanation, looking a bit puzzled as to why anyone
would study the behavior of blood.
"Thank you for the information. We shall be on our guard. Please notify
the Watch and Rangers at their barracks by the Valley Gate. Good day." He nods
politely to Amanda, then kicks his horse into a trot to catch up with the
escort.

Another mile and you crest a low hill and see the walls of Nygg in the distance.
The town of Nygg has a population of aboout 3,000 plus a full time garrison of
about 600. It is a walled town whose southern wall is set to the edge of the
cliff over looking the desert. There are two gates, the Valley Gate from which
the road to Drunmore leads, and the Desert Gate to which the ancestor's ramp out
of the desert ascends.
Amanda is visibly excited as you pass through the gates. The soldiers on duty
watch her with interest and give you a desulatory glance. As you pass out of
the shadow of the gate tower, Amanda points to a stone, two story building to
the right. "That's the Watch Barracks." She says.

There are a couple guardmen lounging outside. They look with interest, first
at you, then at Amanda. One says, eyes flickering to you briefly. "How far
out? A day?" He nods to a weathered looking door at one end of the barracks
building. "Need to go talk to the Rangers then."
As you approach the door you can hear voices inside.
"What are you going to do about this?" A voice demands
"This is not the first time livestock and people have disappeared. But I can
hardly search the whole Palood and there hasn't been any discernable trail to
follow. You know that." Someone answers
"That is not an answer!" A man's voice rises in obvious anger
"What would you like me to do!" The second voice shouts back.
"Send for the Avengers, put out some paper... I don't know, but do something!"

There are two men in the room, one, an older man with long graying hair and

but balding, cleanshaven and obviously fat, is standing in front of the desk.
The fat one was leaning forward, both hands on the desk, clearly lecturing the
seated man. Both men are redfaced and clearly angry. They both turn to you when
you enter.
"Who the bloody hell are you?" Demands the seated man.. "How dare you enter this
office uninvited during a meeting!"

The seated man growls, "Ira, you keep pushing and you'll see how many teeth I do

the university. Of course most people of note there have some form of
warning when you get near their office anyways. I initially came just to
report, but I have to admit I am curious about this as well, perhaps if we
could distill the information you already have a pattern might appear. If it
is an unknown creature I can think of a number of people back at the
university who might be willing to pay for a carcass."

"Sorry, last night we had taken shelter from the storm when we heard
a loud screaching noise, and my guardsman went to investigate with a light
I provided. He came back and indicated that there had indeed been
violence, but that in the minutes it had taken to get to the road whatever had
caused the violence, and whatever the victim or prey was was gone as well. In
the morning we conducted a short investigation and concluded that the
ammount of blood spilled indicated at least a man sized or larger victim, and that
whatever had attacked had left either by air or teleportation, as the
trail ended abruptly, air being the most likely. This was at a farm
approximately..." He finishes up with details of distance that I (the
player) don't necessarilly have.
"As for the acadamy, yes, I am from there. They won't get involved
directly, but if this creature does prove to be as interesting as I
suspect, they would certainly be interested in purchasing the specimine for
investigation or teaching after it has been brought in. I might be able
to find someone at the university who would want to stiudy it in the feild,
but since that would involve keeping it alive to study I don't believe that
is what you really want."
"As for myself, I am interested at least in discovering what I can
find out about this creature while I am in town, and am certainly willing to
assist with what knowledge I do have."

there would be some sighting of a cow getting attacked by something they
couldn't see or something. Complete avoidance of detection would mean its
smart. May be invisible as well, but I'm more worried about smart than
invisibility. The question is what kind of smart. It may have a predetors
cleverness and some sort of sense of when something is watching, or it could
be fully inteligent. Do we have a map of where these attacks have occured?"

"Are making a concerted effort to discover the cause of these attacks and
prevent them. It will be noted that this attack has occured further north and
west then any of the previous incidents. Undoubtably due to the increase of
patrols in areas previously subject to the incidents."
Ira stares at him, "You mean that with a little more effort you might be able to
push it out of your jurisdiction and make it some one elses problem?"
The Captain bristles at this, "My responsibility is to the Count of Nygg, not
Drunmore or anywhere or anyone else. He has charged me with the protection of
the rural folk and property of HIS county. If I can catch and kill this thing,
so much the better. If all I can do is drive it off, then I'll settle for that."

reverting to university protocal. That it responds so effectively to a
change in patrols would indicate that the thing is intelligent. Given
what we, sorry, you know, would it be possible to set a trap for it, say
arrange a hole in the patrols where some sort of trap awaited it?"

"This thing is fairly intelligent, but it has also concentrted on this
region for a reason, possibly flight distance from its home. If we give it
an opportunity where nobody appears to be arround, a hole in the patrol
pattern, and a reasonable target, such as a cow or goat in that location, we
should be able to tell it is attacking when the goat is attacked, whether we
can see it or not. The real question is what kind of trap can be sprung if
it can be lured to a certain location."
"I guess the obvious answer would be to sprinkle some sort of sleeping
potion on the hair of the designated target and hope to catch the thing
before it wakes up."

Karl nods. "I am far from the best alchemist at the university, and the
potion I am thinking of requires a week to brew. It would probably be faster
to send someone back to the university if they have any on hand, but I don't
recall off hand if they do or not. I have some other business in town,
ironicly checking on some alchemical supplies we are shipping from here,
after i check the quality of these I should be able to brew such an elixer.
The real question becomes why this thing hasn't taken the bait before. I'm
sure youn know more than I about wild animals, so unless it was a result of
this things intelligence, I don't think I can offer much help in this area.
Might I suggest a test of giving it untrapped and unpoisoned bait durring
the week or so it will take me to prepare this potion? I don't know if you
have been trying live bait or not, but I would think it would certainly be
less suspicious. The point in this is too simply see if we can entice the
creature to take bait before we try and do anything with the bait."

The Captain sighs, "No one seems to appreciate the scope of the problem here,
Ira least of all. This County covers an area measured in square miles. In that
area there are, in addition to the town of Nygg and the fortress, a half dozen
villages and scores and scores of farmsteads. There are also thousands, maybe
tens of thousands head of sheep, goats and cattle. To say nothing of hogs and
poultry. Or patrols have succeded, seemingly, in keeping the... the thing, away
from the villages and most of the homesteads, and in the process those herds
that are pastured in those immediate areas. But there are thousands of animals
pastured away from the patrolled areas. To say nothing of wild game. Even
without these attacks there isn't a week that goes by that someone doesn't
report animals killed by some predator or another. It is impossible to cover
the whole area to such a degree that the trap area becomes attractive. Just
because some days have gone by without a reported attack doesn't mean that the
thing hasn't fed. The prey just hasn't been noticed as missing."
