Girvan Adventure VI
CST 3
Session 6
PCs: Corren, Ferric
Missiledine: Ok, is every one set?
ElwingFD: hope it gets straightened out, I'd kinda like to get more people playing one adventure
Missiledine: When we let off last time, Ferric was preparing to fly across the ravine to the other hill and scout the enemy forces...<I would too, we'll
see.>
Dukejr01: the mage wants to scout. Corren wil cover. he finds a place with some cover. readies his bow and tries to determine their locations. I may try a bluff later
Missiledine: The three of you are hunkered down on top of one hill taking cover from arrow and prodd shots originating from the other hill
Missiledine: ok, Ferric, you ready? What spells are you casting? I know miss shield is running now
ElwingFD: flight first off
Missiledine: ok, spell works and you lift off... almost immediately a volley of arrows is aimed at you
Dukejr01: can Corren get a return shot?
ElwingFD: fly over to their location and see what I can see..
Missiledine: as you fly across the intervening gorgeyou are able to look down and see your attackers, two men and a woman.. the men have the
bows, the woman the prodd
Missiledine: Yes, Corren, you get a shot... and apparently miss
Dukejr01: Duck and reload.
Missiledine: the woman is reloading the prodd, apparently a powerful one with a goatsfoot
ElwingFD: I do a quick survey of the area.....anything like cave entrances or maybe others hidden who are not firing?
Missiledine: the two archers try a second round of arrows as you close the gap.... There is an area of heavy thickets with what appears to be a
trail disappearing into it.. No one else you can see
Missiledine: After another complete miss, one of the archers takes out a whistle and blows two short blasts and one long one.... all three
immediately start an evasive, zig zag run to the thickets
ElwingFD: towards the trail?
Dukejr01: do we get a shot?
Missiledine: yes, tho they will not all get there at once
Missiledine: From your posistion, Corren, all you see is the brush move suddenl in the area the archers had been crouching...
Dukejr01: let a shot fly.
Dukejr01: needa critical anyway
Missiledine: the first archer will reach the trail entrance, duck his head and seem to plunge into the thicket, vanishing from sight
Missiledine: no joy on the arrow
Missiledine: the woman will be next, she didn't finish reloading, but she has the prodd with her...
Dukejr01: do we get a high sign or something?
Missiledine: the thicket is mostly briars and florabunda type plants. It clearly old and established, covering an area about 40' x 60' in size and looks
to be twelve plus feet high... it is visually impenatrable
ElwingFD: once they are no longer a danger to the rest of the party, I signal them across
Missiledine: ok. Corren and Rolb see the signal
Dukejr01: Corren looks at rolb. shrugs. and corren heads down the hill.
Missiledine: Rolb follows along, watching the otherside
ElwingFD: I land on the path, within eyesight of the others
Missiledine: ok
Missiledine: all three attackers have gone to ground in the thicket
Missiledine: you cannot hear any sounds other than normal woodland noises and the brook below
Dukejr01: Corren scrambles up the other hill and joins the mage
Missiledine: Rolb is right behind you... "We'll, ye flushed them out en drove em ta ground. Now, 'ow do we dig em out?"
Dukejr01: is the thicket flamable? Corren stays behind cover. so that they don't shoot him
Missiledine: probably burnable, though it is still green there is a lot of dead stuff inside it
ElwingFD: "I'm not sure now that we are half the party size I thought we would be....guess we play it by ear"
Dukejr01: "smoke would bring other treasure hunters"
Missiledine: "True.. might kill the boy too."
Missiledine: "If he's in there." Rolb adds
Missiledine: from inside the thicket you hear a voice call..."Hello! You outside... What do you want?"
Dukejr01: Corren says nothing. male or female voice?
Missiledine: male
ElwingFD: reminds me of the french knights in the castle in Monty Python's Holy Grail :-)
ElwingFD: Whispers to Corren, "shall we talk to them?"
Dukejr01: "To what end?"
ElwingFD: "information...could be interesting"
Missiledine: "Maybe they will surrender, if we ask nicely."
Dukejr01: corren chortles.
ElwingFD: Ferric smiles
ElwingFD: I yell back "why did you shoot at us?"
Dukejr01: tactically, would a sword be difficult to use i nthe thicket?
Missiledine: probably thrusting only
Dukejr01: Knife work then.
Missiledine: unless it's more clreared out then it looks
Missiledine: "You are trespassing..." The voice replies... "Go away."
Dukejr01: how far into the thicket is the voice?
Missiledine: Can't tell for sure
Missiledine: probably near the center
ElwingFD: "you fire at us and then presume to tell us to leave? I don't think so. This is not your land, so you must be hiding something....what is it?"
Missiledine: "Who says it's not our land? Go away... Leave us alone!"
Dukejr01: "firing the thicket would attract attenton. Going in would be risky."
Dukejr01: can we make sure that they are not sneaking around behind us?
ElwingFD: whispers back "yeah, but it is a good threat, especially if there's no other way out"
Missiledine: How would you do that?
ElwingFD: setting fire that is
Missiledine: "What do you want?"
Dukejr01: what kind of clear area is there around the thicket? what cover is around that a person could use to double around?
ElwingFD: "we're looking for a boy.....a boy who's very powerful father is looking for him. Now you wouldn't happen to know anything about this would you?"
Missiledine: the thicket in question is at the top of the hill, there are several other thicketys lower down the slopes but this is by far the biggest
Missiledine: "No... Go away."
ElwingFD: "Now why don't I believe you?"
Dukejr01: Corren moves off to the side and hides.
Missiledine: "That can't be helped... No boy here... Go away. I'm warning you!"
ElwingFD: whispers "I've got a big suspision this is a red herring...but still...we had information on this place..."
Missiledine: Rolb shakes his head, "I dunno ken... You may be right... but what are they doin out 'ere?"
ElwingFD: "Well then....I'm sure if we can't get you to cooperate, we can go back to the town and find 'daddy', with his hundred or so men-at-arms and let him
know that you are here. I'm sure he won't be convinced that you don't have his boy."
Dukejr01: Corren is silent and listens for a bushwhack
Dukejr01: <not bad>
Missiledine: "Don't know what your talking about... there is no boy here."
ElwingFD: "convince me"
Missiledine: "How?"
ElwingFD: "I'm a mage....I can tell if you lie...come out and I'll test you"
Missiledine: There is a long silence, then. "If your a mage you can tell from there.... Why should I trust you?"
Missiledine: Rolb says, in a loud voice... "Don't waste yer time, jus burn em out."
ElwingFD: "you obviously don't know much about mages if you think that....I need to be closer. As for trust, well if you don't...then we will assume you have the
boy and come in after you...now I fancy fire spells and they can be quite damaging to both plant and animal, plus has the side effect of alerting all those men-at-arms
out there that something intersting is happening here. Now, which would you prefer?"
Missiledine: Another long silence, "Come on in, if you want."
ElwingFD: "I will come to the edge of the thicket, but will not enter. You will meet me there. My body will shield you if you think my partners will fire at you."
Dukejr01: <ballsy>
Missiledine: After a moment, "All right."
ElwingFD: <missile shield>
Missiledine: You hear some movement in the thicket
ElwingFD: whispers "watch my back" Ferric walks towards the thicket
Missiledine: After a moment the voice says, "Come to the entrance of the path so I can see you."
Dukejr01: Corren readies himself for a rush. Shield and spear
Dukejr01: just in case
Missiledine: ok
ElwingFD: I had no intention of walking up hidden.
Missiledine: <From where he is, he can't see you until you are right at the opening>
ElwingFD: I'm at the opening, but a couple yards out
Missiledine: From the shadows a weasely looking man in battered leather armor, emerges, staying well back from easy arrow shot. "All right,
now what?"
ElwingFD: do I see anyone else?
Missiledine: no
ElwingFD: easy arrow shot from me or my companions?
Missiledine: companions
ElwingFD: how far is he from me
Missiledine: thirty feet
Missiledine: give or take
ElwingFD: "you must be much closer then that for me to read you, two yards at least"
Missiledine: "then come closer."
ElwingFD: how much can I see, is there anywhere to hide around the enterance?
Missiledine: maybe behind the man, but not between you and him
ElwingFD: ok...I walk in towards him up to about 2 yards unless I see something out of sorts
Dukejr01: Corren sees him go in thethicket?
Missiledine: you approach warily, he seems a bit intimidated by you, but makes no threatening moves
Missiledine: <yes>
Dukejr01: Corren curses quietly and strains his ears.
Missiledine: You hear nothing
ElwingFD: "I will cast detect lies on you after I ask you the question about the boy, but let me warn you....if you lie, you will become violently sick." I say it loud
enough for everyone in the thickets to hear
ElwingFD: "do you wish to still go through with this?"
Missiledine: The man looks hesitant, then nods. "All right."
ElwingFD: "Are you holding a boy against his father's will?"
Missiledine: "No."
ElwingFD: I cast sickness
Missiledine: Suddenly the man heaves and vomits oin the ground, doubling over and clenching his belly
ElwingFD: "You must be lying!!!!!!!" cancel the spell
Missiledine: ok
ElwingFD: to let him speak
Missiledine: "No!" He gasps, slowly straightening
ElwingFD: "then what are you hiding, my spell would never have reacted so violently if you were'nt hiding some great truth! Speak!"
Missiledine: "You say that you are seeking a boy... he's nor here. Now go away!"
ElwingFD: "obviously you know where he is, or else you would have not gotten so sick...tell me now or we shall not leave you in peace!"
Missiledine: "Your not going to leave us in peace anyway!" He snarls, "Go away or come on in and take us. You don't want any smoke, so you
ain't gonna burn us out!" He moves back into the shadows. "How bad do you want to find out?"
ElwingFD: "don't think I won't burn you out" Start fireball so he can see I'm serious
Dukejr01: Corren puts $100 in a pouch and tosses it toward the entrance of the thicket. "Offer them this" Corren says.
Missiledine: The man hesitates, "If you wanted all them men at arms here, ya'd have fired the brush already, or gone to get em. yer bluffing!"
ElwingFD: "I'll tell you what....my partner out side seems to want to keep reasoning with you....personally I'm for smoking you out..but he want's to offer you
<equivelent of $100> for information regarding the boy....does that sound attractive?"
Missiledine: The man pauses in the shadows, "What do ya want?"
ElwingFD: "the location of the boy....who has him and how many there are.
Missiledine: The man thinks for a bit..."Ye promise not to say who told ya?"
ElwingFD: "If you speak the truth, and give us complete information, I will never tell anyone that you even exist up here."
Missiledine: "I'll tell ye what Ay've heard. It's all I can do."
ElwingFD: "ok, and maybe you can tell us if it's related to that cave trap on the other side which we found"
Missiledine: "Neh, that's ours."
ElwingFD: "ah...very effective"
Dukejr01: <heh heh. I didn;t say I went IN to the cave. but since I wasn;t injured, I don't care.>
Missiledine: "East of ere, along the river on the other side of the forest, there is an old tower... Ah don't know who built it, the King, Duke,
whatever... It used to watch over the river, but the river moved and it's no good fer nothin... I've heard that those who got the boy are there."
ElwingFD: "do you know how many?"
Missiledine: "Last I eard the Hunbchback had em, he's got maybe a half dozen swords."
ElwingFD: "any mages? do you know why he wants him?"
Missiledine: He shakes his head, "Don't know about no wizards... ransom I s'pect... mebbe to sell to the slavers."
ElwingFD: "who is this Hunchback, keep to himself or does he have a wider reputation?"
Missiledine: "One think fer sure, the Hunchback knew the boy was comin, he don't usually come this way, but he did that night."\
Missiledine: "The Hunchback? He's a bad one... nastiest river pirate, kidnapper, brigand, smuggler, slaver, horse thief you will ever meet."
ElwingFD: "sounds like he has someone on the inside"
Missiledine: "Don't know bout that."
Missiledine: "Now, throw me the money and go away."
Missiledine: He is waiting expectently, clearly poised to retreat from view if needed
ElwingFD: I turn around, pick up the pouch that Corren threw, check it and throw it on the ground between him and me. I say "I thank you for the information, and
I promise that I will not reveal anything about this place, but I warn you that if I find you have lied, I will be back with all promises off."
Dukejr01: Do we hear all this?
Missiledine: <yes>
ElwingFD: I back away and exit back to Corren
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: Corren will cover the withdrawal
Dukejr01: "Let's go"
Missiledine: nothing occurs... where do you withdrawl to?
Dukejr01: the horse
Missiledine: ok
ElwingFD: "yes lets" and I retell everything that they may or may not have heard
Missiledine: About ten minutes later you are back at the horse
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: lets go around these guys.
Dukejr01: be off to the tower. East!
Dukejr01: along the river.
ElwingFD: hopefully it will be night soon, could use a boost before we reach the tower
Dukejr01: k
Dukejr01: lets cover some ground first
ElwingFD: actually as long as we have a night before we get there
Missiledine: The shortest path to the river is south east from here. The Girvan forest, which you are in, is on a triangular penninsula formed by the
river. The point is east of here, you are at the base. The apex of the triangle is about 20 miles east
Dukejr01: okay. then we can't miss if we just head east. not following the river might be a good idea.
Missiledine: not knowing exactly where the tower is, means searching along the river edge. Do you want to start with the southern leg or the
northern?
Dukejr01: southern
Missiledine: ok, that is closest
Dukejr01: exactly
ElwingFD: "we need to discuss that there appears to be an informant within 'daddy's' inner circle, that has me a bit worried"
Missiledine: Rolb says, "This tower won't be right on the river, or it'd still be in use... Probably back a hundred yards or more."
Dukejr01: "It'll probably be on a hill"
Missiledine: "Hmm, aye, that is a good point."
Missiledine: "D'ya think we should let 'Daddy' know?"
Dukejr01: "The kid might be in on it. for some reason."
Dukejr01: "Seven or more men in a tower will be a tough fight. Depends on how greedy we are. The edge wil lbe our mage."
Missiledine: "Did na Ham dsay th
ElwingFD: "hmmm....that might alert the informant.....of course it could be the kid's idea"
Missiledine: <sorry>
Missiledine: ...that the group he spied on talked about this Hunchback character?"
Dukejr01: "If we recue the kid, we will have to keep a sharp eye on him and make the exchange in a public place.
Dukejr01: "If the Hunch Back isbehind this, he'll have that damn white skinned ghoul with him!"
Dukejr01: was the quote
Missiledine: "Ya know..." Rolb says thoughtfully..."If Daddy is offering 200 Solars for a rescue, it must be a bargain compared to the ransome..."
Missiledine: <Aren't the Archives handy?>
Dukejr01: "I thought it odd that he would have spent he day drinking in the Inn and later teasing that wench when his son is kidnapped"
Missiledine: "Otherwise, just pay the ransome."
Missiledine: "Mebbe he was wait'n fer a contact?"
Dukejr01: "We shoudl scout out the tower and see if there is activity. Decide then. We might be better off selling the information.
ElwingFD: "that might not be a bad idea"
Missiledine: "Aye, but I wonder if leavin that lot.." Ge ghestures back to the hill. "Is a good idea. They might send word the we are comin."
Dukejr01: lets go!
ElwingFD: "faster than we can get there?"
Missiledine: "They ken where the tower is."
Dukejr01: "Right. We might want to wait and follow them."
Missiledine: "Or take them out..." Rolb says thoughtfully
Dukejr01: "Not easy. they have that thicket"
Missiledine: "They have at least $100 to gain." Rolb grins
Dukejr01: Corren shakes his head.
Dukejr01: He doesn't know.
Missiledine: "Then we either watch em awhile, in hopes that they show the way, mop em up, or set out searching now."
Dukejr01: "Watch and wait. we lose nothing. much to gain"
ElwingFD: "agreed"
Dukejr01: Can we find a good watch post?
Missiledine: "Good enough... We need to find a place to hide then."
Missiledine: there are a lot of thickets and areas of dense undergrowth that could hide you, but yo won't be able to see all sides of the hills.
Missiledine: unless you split up
Dukejr01: we should find a place where we can watch most ways off the hill to the east. maybe three separate places,
Dukejr01: split up. try to find places one can see the other and the second can see the third.
Dukejr01: maybe within bow shot?
Dukejr01: set up a signal system.
Missiledine: "Dunna like splitting up... Mebbe the wiz can fly up into a tree and watch the whole area?"
Dukejr01: any good trees?
Missiledine: Hundreds
Dukejr01: you could cast levitation on Corren.
ElwingFD: that was my question
Dukejr01: yes, but one that would be best? on a rise and high?
Missiledine: fly to one on the hill with the thicket
Missiledine: tallest around
Dukejr01: would that be seen?
Missiledine: good view too
ElwingFD: one that's big enough for all three?
Missiledine: all three?
Missiledine: Rolb says, "I dunno like high places... I'll stay with me horse."
Dukejr01: Corren will go.
Missiledine: still a lot of leaves on the trees, pretty good cover
ElwingFD: ok, well Corren and I will go up
Missiledine: on the hill?
Dukejr01: What is the house rules on casting fly on someone else?
ElwingFD: sure, will Rolb move the horses within our line of site too?
Missiledine: <you mean in regards to running into houses?>
Missiledine: yes
Dukejr01: yes. can a mage cast fly on a non mage and will that non mage fly like that Greatest American Hero guy? you know
"AAAAAAAaaaaAAAAAaaaHHHHHH!!!
ElwingFD: I would probably lift you up with me
Dukejr01: up to you. one may be better.
Missiledine: DX-4 is default, by the book
Dukejr01: k. maybe you should go alone. you are not in much danger up there.
Dukejr01: two is eaier to hide than one
Missiledine: ?
Dukejr01: I mean one is easier to hide than 2
Missiledine: better
Missiledine: Going up, Ferric?
ElwingFD: whatever, I can go up alone, but 4 eyes are better than 2 in spoting things
Dukejr01: whatever. get thine butt in the tree.
Missiledine: "Just watch the thicket, if they ad an escape route they'd have used it before." Rolb says
Dukejr01: I am thinking concealment. Corren would default to 9 in flying,. which should suffice since I would be doing anything fancy
Dukejr01: good point.
Missiledine: <Landing on a tree branch? Quietly?>
Dukejr01: another point. 2 guys on the ground would intercept them more easily.
ElwingFD: nah, levitation would work nicely...I'd be controlling
Dukejr01: another reason to not send two. I suggest that Ferric fly up to the tree.
ElwingFD: I'll head up alone, if there is no change of minds
Missiledine: Rolb asks, "Levitation? That's going straight up, right? Won't Corren need to be by the tree when ye do it then?"
Missiledine: <Go on>
ElwingFD: well it does say a move of 3
Missiledine: <Rolb is not the GM!>
Missiledine: You going Ferric?
ElwingFD: yes
Dukejr01: keep the tree between you and the thicket so they don't see you.
Dukejr01: corren hides.
Missiledine: the spell works and you are soon safely perched in a tree about fifty feet above the thicket and 120+ feet above the surrounding area
Dukejr01: <Cool>
Dukejr01: <mages are useful, but a proper party has majority fighters>
Missiledine: <Chauvenist!>
ElwingFD: <yes....for cannon fodder>
Dukejr01: <pragmatist>
Missiledine: lol
Dukejr01: <everyone wants to be the effing mage>
Missiledine: <Effing? What spell is that?:-D
ElwingFD: <but only few succeed....the few the proud, the effing mages!>
Missiledine: brb guys, my dog is going nuts!
ElwingFD: we need to end this soon anyway
Dukejr01: <"effing" is the PG 13>
Missiledine: true
Missiledine: Files are saved
ElwingFD: 11:30 is about pumpkin time
Missiledine: lol
ElwingFD: wow, it's like we're frozen in time
Missiledine: Ok
Missiledine: back
Dukejr01: k
Dukejr01: wrapping up here or do we see anything>?
ElwingFD: I was figuring on wrapping
Missiledine: wrapping up... I like to maintain the suspense
Dukejr01: k
ElwingFD: maybe we'll here from the others before next week.
Dukejr01: well ,we inched forward
ElwingFD: hear
Dukejr01: good info gathering, btw, ty
Missiledine: Hmm, I think you did all right tonight.... Yes, good job
ElwingFD: I had a good night....been so few
