Corren & Rowan VI
7th Game Session
Velitrium Campaign: Lendale Faire, Into
the
Palood
PCs: Corren, Rowan
Missiledine: ok...it's early morning. The
mists are heavy, everything is pretty damp.
Rolb is cooking breakfast
Dukejr01: Corren stretches, checks his
gear, takes care of "business".
Missiledine: As he finishes that, the rest of
you pack up the boats. Talbon is consulting
his parchment again
Missiledine: "We are perhaps three hours
from our destination." He announces as he
puts the paper away "Or, we're hopelessly
lost."
Dukejr01: Corren smiles wryly. shrugs.
Missiledine: After you finish eating and
clamber into the boats, Talbon points his
oar in the direction you have been traveling.
"Thatta way."
Dukejr01: Off we go... into the swampy
mists....
Missiledine: After you have been paddling
for about an hour and a half, you notice
some changes in the terrain. The reedy
swamps are giving way to more trees and
stretches of real earth. The channel is
narrowing some, and you are seeing a few
big boulders
Missiledine: Another hour or so and now
the area is definately changing. There are
larger and larger islands, true islands, not
those reed and mud pads you slept on
last night. The trees are becoming bigger
and you see more 'dry' type species. There
are far more rocks and boulders as well
Dukejr01: Corren looks around with
interest.
Missiledine: A little further on and ahead
you see the shape of a hill, tree covereds
and studded with a number of large
boulders
Dukejr01: ta daaaa.
Missiledine: Talbon is heading for the hill.
Its completely surrounded by water, so its
also an island
ElwingFD: how big is this island?
Missiledine: The margins, where the trees
don't overhang the water, are reed grown,
and it is to one of these areas that Talbon
steers
Missiledine: Several acres in extent
Dukejr01: trees big enough to climb?
Missiledine: Probably 150 to 180 feet high
at the top
Missiledine: yes, easily
Dukejr01: okay
Missiledine: Talbon holds offd landing,
craneing his neck around to look at you
Missiledine: He is clearly waiting for the
money fighters to go first
Dukejr01: Corren paddles on in.
Dukejr01: am I in the bow?
ElwingFD: you can be if you want ;-)
Missiledine: As the bow pushes through the
reeds, Corren, who is in the bow, almost
shits himself as several ducks explode from
cover in a flurry of wings and
sqawks
Dukejr01: If corren is in the bow. he puts
away his paddle and takes up spear.
Dukejr01: any close? good eating, those.
Missiledine: Sorry, too late
Dukejr01: <sigh>
Dukejr01: "shoulda brought a net...."
Missiledine: Rolb says, "Don't worry lad,
them Coohlari are probably good eatin too.
I'll see if I can find one fer ye."
Dukejr01: corren probes the water around
the landing area a little with his spear to
make sure no coohari are there. not that I
am expecting any, since there were
ducks.
Missiledine: You find nothing. Rolb paddles
you aground
Dukejr01: "Oh, would you? I'd really
appreciate that."
Dukejr01: Corren jups off and pulls the
canoe ashore.
Missiledine: "No problem, laddie! I'll put im
in yer bedroll."
Dukejr01: Corren chuckles. Unships shield
and stalks "inland" looking for trouble.
Dukejr01: looks around, then up into the
trees. stops to listen.
Missiledine: A few minutes later and Talbon
and Yossarian are ashore. Rolb jumps out
and wades the last yard, pushing the boat
as he goes
Missiledine: Lots of birds, bees, bugs, the
usual sounds of the swamp
Dukejr01: corren does a quick perimeter
before going back to help Rolb
Missiledine: How far out are you going?
Dukejr01: ten yards.
Missiledine: ok, nothing inside that radius
Dukejr01: depends on how dense the brush
is.
Dukejr01: essentially looking for anything
immediate.
Dukejr01: okay. get gear unshipped. put on
backpack.
Missiledine: Mostly tall grasses and low
shrubs in this immediate area. Trees start
about 60' further on
ElwingFD: ok Talbon, you want to give us
any more detail that will help us in what to
expect?
Missiledine: He looks at you for a moment,
then says. "Somewhere near the summit
we will find the entrence."
Missiledine: He picks up his gear, and
accompanied by Yossarian, starts across
the clearing
ElwingFD: I will follow them
Dukejr01: Corren takes right flank.
Missiledine: There are some fairly steep
bits to climb, but there are a lot of trees and
shrubs to help pull yourselves up, so tho
hard work its not particularly
challenging
Dukejr01: Corren stops occasionally to
listen.
Missiledine: The summit area is visible
now. The entire slope of the hill, as far as
you can see, is dotted with stones and
boulders. Near the summit the boulders
seem
to be arranged in a series of rings set
about 30' apart and seem to encircle the hill
top
Missiledine: You clamber through the first
ring, then the second. By now Talbon is
walking very slowly, peering intently at the
ground and the stones and the
underbrush
Dukejr01: Corren looks around for ambush.
checks his six
Missiledine: He starts circling the hill,
following the inner ring of stones. You get a
third of the way around when he pauses
and points. Through the brush you see two
tall, pointy stones, almost like fangs,
sticking up. Each stone is maybe 12' high
and 6' apart
Missiledine: "That's what we are looking
for! Right there!"
Missiledine: He heads towards it eagerly
Dukejr01: Corren takes out a waterskin....
drinks.
ElwingFD: why do I feel like Indiana Jones?
Missiledine: He starts to push into the
undergrowth, but Yossarian stops him and
amkes a hacking motion with his hand
ElwingFD: "what are they?"
Missiledine: (Do you have a hat?)
Missiledine: What?
Dukejr01: are there any machettes in the
gear?
Missiledine: No, but several swords
Missiledine: Ty, what are they?
Dukejr01: corren doesn't havea sword. you
mean, Talbon has some swords suitable to
clear brush, or are they weapons?
ElwingFD: are you asking or mimmicking
my question?
Missiledine: asking
Dukejr01: I think Rowen was asking Talbon
what the pointy rocks are.
ElwingFD: correct
Missiledine: "The entrence!"
Missiledine: entrance
Dukejr01: corren clears brush.
Missiledine: Talbon has a sword, so does
Rolb
Dukejr01: he is wearing his gloves. uses
his large knife.
Missiledine: Sorry Ty, missed the context
ElwingFD: ah
Dukejr01: grab plants by the stem, hacks at
base.
Missiledine: As the brush is cut away an
opening is revealed. Between the two
uprights is a low, but wide opening. It is
about 4' high and runs from upright to
upright
(6') It is roofed, or supported with a thick
stone slab
Dukejr01: corren lights a torch or lamp
Missiledine: Dirt, comprising the bulk of the
rest of the hill, is abov the slab. The interior
is very, very dark
Missiledine: Talbon looks very pleased.
"Alright, lets bring the rest of the gear up
here and set up camp and get ready."
Dukejr01: actually, coreen uses his axe to
clear brush. forgot about that.
Dukejr01: "Aye, Lord."
Dukejr01: Corren goes to get gear.
Dukejr01: tacit on way.
tacit01 has entered the room.
Missiledine: It'll take about a half hour to
haul the stuff up here. Once its all present,
Talbon lights a lantern and crouches down,
a few feet back and shines the light
in
Missiledine: Ty, another Velitrium player is
coming in to observe
Missiledine: Name is Troy
Dukejr01: hey troy. this is Tyler, playing
Rowen, you know Jim
ElwingFD: Hi Troy
tacit01: howdy
Missiledine: As the light enters the hole,
there is a flurry of wings and a loty of
squeaking. Suddenly a cloud of bats pours
out...
Dukejr01: what all kind of "stuff" do we
have?
Missiledine: Talbon rocks backwards to
stay clear
Dukejr01: Corren crouches unhuriedly.
Missiledine: There is a pile of lanterns,
ropes, prybars, picks, shovels, sledge
hammer, spikes, chisels....
Missiledine: Pretty well equipped
Missiledine: Talbon calls for a rope
Dukejr01: k. thanks. corrrn get his some
rope
Dukejr01: he brinks back two coils.
Missiledine: He ties the rope to the lantern
and swings it out and lets it drop down into
the dark. He plays out about eight or ten
feet and then the rope goes slack.
Missiledine: "Hmmm, someone take a look
down there." He says
Missiledine: I see everyone rushes to look
Dukejr01: sorry. coffee
Missiledine: sure
Dukejr01: Corren crawls forward to take a
look. he has his knife out.
Missiledine: The interior proves to be about
8' from the opening to the back wall. It is
squared off with what looks to be dresseds
stone forming the walls. THe
bottom, where the lantern is now sitting, is
littered with sticks, leaves and bat guano
Missiledine: It is well illuminated and other
than cobwebs and spiders etc, appears
empty
Dukejr01: "Pee-yoo. Dressed stone, about
8' back, nothing but sticks and bat shit."
Dukejr01: corren puts away his knife and
stands up. anything to tie the other rope off
onto?
Missiledine: Talbon has Rolb tie off one
end of the rope to a stout tree, thenlooks
down for a minute
Dukejr01: k.
Missiledine: "We'll need to clear the bottom
to find the door."
Dukejr01: COrren puts a coil of rope, a
prybar in his backpack, picks up a shovel.
He will climb down to begin clearing.
Dukejr01: <notices Corren does a lot of
volunteering.>
Missiledine: (Well, the boss is paying you
guys to get dirty/bloody or dead... How you
divide the labor is up to you. But Ty is afraid
of my adventures... very afraid)
Missiledine: (Aren't you, Ty?)
Dukejr01: I noticed he is not jumping.
ElwingFD: always
Dukejr01: I don['t suppose shape earth
would move bat shit out of the way
ElwingFD: and the boss is paying for
protection not for doing his dirty work as I
recall
Dukejr01: <snort>
Missiledine: Hmm, don't remember that in
the contract...
ElwingFD: I don't remember a contract
Missiledine: (Keep up that attitude and
Talbon won't remeber how much your
suppose to get paid!)
Dukejr01: contract was for services.
Missiledine: Ok, who's in the shit, er, hole
ElwingFD: I'm paid to bodyguard, not to
wipe his ass
Dukejr01: Corren already volunteered.
Missiledine: (I see, well, lets see who's ass
will need saving before its over with!)
ElwingFD: I don't think I remember how
much he is suppose to pay me...mostly in
shares I think
Dukejr01: "For you...$500 per month plus
10% of spoils"
Missiledine: Ok, Corren, you find that the
guano is pretty deep, but its not difficult
digging
Missiledine: Talbon calls down,
"Concentrate on the center, it's most likely
where you'll find the slab
Dukejr01: bleah. Corren will want to clean
off afterward
Dukejr01: corren shoves shit off to side.
Dukejr01: he tries not to get too dirty.
Missiledine: Altogether its about 18" of
guano. Working from the center and
spreading out, you eventually hit stone
Missiledine: (Good luck)
Dukejr01: okay, clear around in a circle
Missiledine: It seems to be a solid piece of
stone down here...
Missiledine: After clearing an area about
three feet across, you find what seems to
be a seam
Dukejr01: "found a seam"
Missiledine: Tracing it with the shovel blade
you can eventually uncover a circular piece
of stone about 3.5' across, set flush in the
floor
Dukejr01: "found it. about 3 and a half feet
in diameter"
Missiledine: Talbon will climb down and
study it for a bit. "This is it! This is the
entrance."
Missiledine: He passes his hand over it
several times, then says, "Lets get the pry
bars down here!"
Dukejr01: corren catches one.
Missiledine: Yossarian, who has a LOT of
muscles, will pass down two bars, then
climb down himself
ElwingFD: how much more room is there,
or do we need a lookout on top?
Missiledine: Rolb leans over the hole and
says, "How are ya holdin out laddie?"
Dukejr01: "you wanna be muscles? Ican
clean off."
Missiledine: Well, the floor is 6 x 8, so three
is pretty crowded right now, with room to
work the bars
Missiledine: "All right, if ya rather an old
man like me show up a young buck like
you!"
Missiledine: Talbon will climb out of the
hole to give you room to work.
Dukejr01: Corren laughs, climbs up. "I can
take the blow to my ego."
Dukejr01: Corren goes to clean off some.
pulls up handfuls of grass to wipe off his
boots etc. then water to wash hands.
Missiledine: Rolb clambers down and
grabs a bar. He and Yossarian spend
several minutes hammering away at the
edges, until they finally chip enough to set
the
pry. Then the real fun begins
Dukejr01: room for a third now that Corren
is reasonably clean, if no sweet smelling?
Missiledine: The two heave and grunt and
heave for several minutes, until at last the
slab seems to shift.
Missiledine: Rolb will call for someone to
come down with a hammer and spikes to
wedge the gap when one appears
Dukejr01: Corren hurries down
Missiledine: Another five minutes of huffing
and heaving brings one edge up to the
point where an thin opening appears....
Before you can move to spike the gap, a
strong wind blows out of the gap, swirling
the guano all about, making everyone
choke and cough... The slab slips and the
gap is closed. After a bit the dust will
settle
Missiledine: "Damn!" Rolb coughs
Missiledine: From above you hear Talbon
say, "It hasn't been opened in almost 800
years."
Dukejr01: bleah. corren ties a cloth over his
mouth and nose
Missiledine: After everyone catches their
breath, Yossarian and Rolb start again
Missiledine: It takes another five minuteds
to reopen the crack... This time the airflow
is much less
Dukejr01: can corren help pry?
Missiledine: Rolb calls for you to start
hammering in the 'damned spikes'
Dukejr01: hammer away
Missiledine: Once the spikes are set in
place the men can relax without fear of the
gap closing... Then they can move the
prybars to a new spot and lift there
Missiledine: It takes four more lift and
spikes, bt at last the slab is free of the hole
Missiledine: The stone is almost 5 inches
thick
Dukejr01: whew.
Missiledine: Once it is clear of the lip, all
three of you can wrestle it to the side
Missiledine: You are now looking down into
a round, black pit
Dukejr01: right. lowerthe lamp
Missiledine: Talbon climbs down, "Wait!"
Dukejr01: corren waits
Missiledine: Crouching over the hole,
Talbon seems to concentrate for a bit, then
says, "Ok, now."
Dukejr01: corren lowers the lamop
Missiledine: The light lowers down a few
inches from a worked stone wall. Opening
further into the hillside is a room, exact
dimensions are hard to see, but the floor
is about twelve feet down
Missiledine: The floor is of irregular stone
slates. The whole thing appears damp and
slimy looking
Missiledine: Rolb lays down and wiggles
forward, "Someone grab me belt."
Missiledine: He lowers his head and
shoulders into the darkness and twists
around to look
Missiledine: Yossarian will grab Rolb's
harness as the merc lowers himself to peer
around
Dukejr01: sorry. getting dog.
Missiledine: "Och! What a lovely, nasty wet
hole this is!" Rolb mutters
Dukejr01: will the previously tied off rope
reach down into this hole?
Missiledine: "Its a bit of a hallway down
here." Rolb calls "Nuthin seems to be
movein tho..."
Missiledine: Yes
Missiledine: Rolb struggles to pull himself
out, Yossarian drags him back
Dukejr01: "We can use this rope, sjould we
usea second?
Missiledine: "All kinds of slime and moss
and fungus stuff on the walls." Rolb reports
Missiledine: "It would be prudent." Talbon
agrees. He peers into the hole. "Rowan,"
He calls. "You know all about plants and
such. Go down there and see what
this stuff is."
Dukejr01: "Could be dangerous?" Corren
looks at Rowen. "Take a look?
Dukejr01: nix
ElwingFD: look at what? or are you hinting
at magic?
Dukejr01: Corren climbs out so there will
be room
ElwingFD: oh sorry, missed Jim's post
Missiledine: "Its some kind of plant matter
on the wall." Talbon says "See if its safe to
go down"
ElwingFD: Rowan climbs down to where
Rolb is
Missiledine: As Rowan is climbing down,
Talbon says, "Some exotic types of mold
are highly poisonous, and some slimes are
acidic in nature."
ElwingFD: takes a lantern and looks
through the hole as Rolb did. "Rolb, hold on
to me"
Missiledine: "A Druid will be able to tell"
Missiledine: Rolb grabs on
Dukejr01: Corren sharpens his knife.
ElwingFD: well, Rowan takes a good look
around and uses his naturalist skill to make
a determination
Missiledine: You can see the chamber
below is about 12' deep, maybe 8' wide
and runs into the hill about 15' The walls are
dressed stone, the floor is slate flag, at
the far end is a large stone door.
ElwingFD: and the plant life?
Missiledine: The walls and floors are
festooned with fungus, mold, mosses, and
oozing slimey gunk of all manner and
description....
Dukejr01: green slime tea, anyone?
ElwingFD: anything that appears to be
dangerous?
Missiledine: You don't see anything that
strikes you as immediately dangerous. Lots
of things you wouldn't want to eat, but its
hard to do an accurate assesment
Missiledine: Dark, fuzzy looking walls are
hard to asses
ElwingFD: what about the floor, is it just wet
or is it covered in muck too?
Missiledine: wet looking, kind of green.
Could be some kind of slime, or algae or
who knows what
Missiledine: looks slippery
ElwingFD: I'd like to tie off a lantern to a
rope and lower it down to get a better look
at the floor
Missiledine: already done
Missiledine: sitting on floor
ElwingFD: ok, I didn't think it was all the
way on the floor
Missiledine: yep
Missiledine: Talbon says, "What do you
think?"
ElwingFD: Rowan reports that he can see
no obvious danger, but it's too dark to
make a detailed accessment
Missiledine: "Hmm, well then, Go down and
see whats what."
ElwingFD: tie off a second rope and lower
down to us
Missiledine: ok
Dukejr01: Corren ties off a second rope.
tosses it to Rowen
ElwingFD: Rowan will tie off the end around
himself and have Rolb and "Mr. Muscles"
lower me down
Missiledine: Its about 12' down, and the
descent is unevenful. As they are lowering
you, you hear Talbon explain "Jhensari
tombs are often protected and trapped
with a variety of strange plant life. I've heard
some incredible accounts of what they do
to the unwary. That's why I knew a Druid
would be invaluable."
ElwingFD: well, I'll be on the lookout for
strange plantlife
ElwingFD: Rowan takes the lantern once
he's down and starts to examine the walls
and ceiling
Missiledine: There are many things down
here that you have never seen before. But
of immediate concern is your footing. As
soon as your weight is off the rope,
you start to slide towards the door at the far
end
ElwingFD: take up the slack!!!
Dukejr01: neat trap. if it is one. is corren in
any position to pull the rope up?
ElwingFD: that's why I didn't climb down
and kept the rope tied
Missiledine: Grabbing at the rope, you slip
and land in a half sitting posistion in the
muck. As the slack is drawn in you realize
that you are still sliding and that the
floor is sloped, very subtly, towards the
door
Missiledine: You are lifted back onto your
feet by the rope
ElwingFD: wonder why the lantern didn't
slide
Dukejr01: Corren says" Maybe we could
covert he floor with dirt, rocks or grass.
Missiledine: "Probably not heavy enough"
Talbon suggests
Missiledine: (The lantern)'
Missiledine: Rolb nods, "Good thinkin lad!
Lets shovel the shit in."
ElwingFD: well, now that I know the floor is
slippery and slanted, is there any way to
maneuver to the walls?
Dukejr01: corren hands the shovel down to
him.
Dukejr01: corren goes to collect the brush
we cut away to get in here.
Missiledine: With graet diffuculty, keeping
the rope taut, you can work yourway over.
You loose your footing several timesd, but
the rope will keep you up
ElwingFD: I just wanted to get a better look
at the walls and the plant life
Missiledine: As stated, the walls are
covered with a wide variety of plant forms,
many you have never seen before
Missiledine: As you move to study the
fauna, you notice that behind the layer of
growth are, what appear to be rings or
indentations in the wall
Dukejr01: Identify plant might work.
ElwingFD: well how about an indentify plant
spell ?
Missiledine: you have it
ElwingFD: yep
ElwingFD: I was typing it as Dave was :-)
Missiledine: One cast per plant type
ElwingFD: how do I pick out one plant in all
of this?
Dukejr01: great minds
Missiledine: eenie, meenie, minnie...
Missiledine: You can identify an individual
plant, question is, which one to start with
Dukejr01: we will have some time.....
ElwingFD: never mind, it probably won't
help at this point, not until we're ready to
touch something.....I have a better idea, I
cast plant vision to see what's behind all
this growth
Missiledine: Some of it you can see
through, a lot of it you can't
ElwingFD: that would be the fungus
Missiledine: What you see is that the wall
behind has a lot of carvings on it
Missiledine: Hmm, not all of it
ElwingFD: can I make out anything?
Missiledine: It has Jhensari Hieroglyphics
and another pattern of rings carved in it
Missiledine: The rings do not appear to ber
part of the hieroglyphic workings
ElwingFD: are the rings carved into the wall
or are they attached to it?
Missiledine: carved in
tacit01: Thanks for letting me lurk; I'm
gonna get offline - Tyler, nice meeting you;
Jim, you are a gentleman and a scholar;
Dave, bugger off =-O
Missiledine: the inner circle is much deeper
then the outer
Dukejr01: troy: biteme
Missiledine: Thank you for noticing
Dukejr01: brown-noser
ElwingFD: I need to call it quits soon
too....late night
ElwingFD: see ya Troy
Missiledine: ok, just let me kill you, please!
tacit01 has left the room.
Dukejr01: killin' plants
ElwingFD: you need to ask???
Missiledine: before you leave :-D
ElwingFD: hmmm....can't you keep me
alive for a while longer?
Missiledine: The shit and trash shoveling
procedes apace....
Missiledine: Sure, a bit
Missiledine: there is a growing pile on the
floor under the hole
