Corren & Rowan IV
5th Game Session
Velitrium Campaign: Lendale Faire
PC: Corren
Rowan
You have just entered room "Missiledine Chat51."
DukeJrsub1 has entered the room.
DukeJrsub1: Yo
ElwingFD: hey
DukeJrsub1: I think we left off going to bed to get up early inthe morning
Missiledine: Thats right... You will awaken in your respective sleeping rolls, along with the fleas and
lice that torment your miserable bodies... Thus begins another day
DukeJrsub1: great.
DukeJrsub1: Corren goes for breakfast.
Missiledine: The first time a PC says "I take off all my armor and magic items to have a bath..." I'll
reconsider that description
ElwingFD: you mean I can get a bath around here?
Missiledine: Yep, you need one too..
DukeJrsub1: right. corren grabs a munchie and a beer and
trots off the the docks. maybe he can bath upstream of them
before we leave'
Missiledine: Any rate, you 'll probably be in plenty of hot
water before too long!
ElwingFD: well, seeings how I dont have any magic items, I
can bathe
DukeJrsub1: Corren has DR 3 to hot water. Did I mention
that?
ElwingFD: drumroll
Missiledine: Distant cosmic chuckle...
ElwingFD: can we wash in a stream before going to the
docks?
Missiledine: You can bathe in the river if you want... You'll have lots of company
DukeJrsub1: Corren bathes in teh river.
Missiledine: okay
ElwingFD: yeah, I bathe in the teh river also :-)
Missiledine: Nothing will attac.... er, bother you while you
frolic about naked in the early fall morning
DukeJrsub1: clothes too.
ElwingFD: I'm not frolicing.....I'm prancing
DukeJrsub1: several jokes can be madehere.
Missiledine: Paying a few bucks to use the heated public
baths is a thought
ElwingFD: I'm a druid, I can take it
DukeJrsub1: Corren is tough, he will bath in the cold outdoor air.
DukeJrsub1: okay then. unless we are atacked by sex
starved Amazons, Corren puts his clothes back on and ambles
to the docks
Missiledine: Sadly, for you, no such luck
Missiledine: Your abulutions are undisturbed
Missiledine: When you are dressed you amble your way
down to the docks.
DukeJrsub1: Corren is on the lookout for Rolb and Talbon
Missiledine: the area is beginning to bustle with activity. Grain barges are unloading and a variety of
river craft are beginning to move about on the watere
Missiledine: Down towards the quieter end of the docks
(Though called the Grain Docks the area handle all the river
traffic for the town.) You can see Rolb standing looking down at the water, clearly talking to someone
below him
ElwingFD: I'm following Corren
DukeJrsub1: Corren beelines for him. not hurrying.
Missiledine: As you get closer you can see two small boats.
Known locally as long boats, they are kind of a cross between a rowboat and a canoe. Plank built but
long and narrow with a prow at each end. They are paddlked or poled
DukeJrsub1: Corren has his shield slung but his spear in one
hand using it like a walking staff
DukeJrsub1: who is in the boats?
Missiledine: Talbon and another man, one of the ones from
the tavern, are sorting stuff in one of the boats
Missiledine: The boats are about 14 feet long. In each of
them are several packs, bundles of blankets, ropes,
waterskins, etc
DukeJrsub1: okay. Corren nods to Rolb and stands ready.
spear tucked butt next to boot. Do they look like they need
help?
Missiledine: Rolb's stuff is by his feet
Missiledine: No, the unoccupied boat has already been
sorted out. This is the last one to do
Missiledine: Talbon glances up and nods his greeting
DukeJrsub1: okay. Corren lends a hand
ElwingFD: does Talbon see me?
Missiledine: Nothing much to do except pass your gear down
to the other boat. Rolb will scramble down in and start placing it
Missiledine: yes
DukeJrsub1: okay. Corren does so.
DukeJrsub1: Corren helps pack. steadying the boat, handing
things, etc. he is not afraid to get wet
Missiledine: You just swam in the river, you are wet
DukeJrsub1: precisely
Missiledine: (Rowan, Talbon looked at you when he nodded
his geeting) As Talbon finishes lashing a few things down he straightens up and climbs up onto the
dock
ElwingFD: I nod back to him
DukeJrsub1: Corren continues to aid Rolb.
Missiledine: Talbon wipes his hands clean then looks at you
(Rowan) "Have you decided to accept my offer?"
ElwingFD: I will accept, for the want of anything pressing for me at the moment
DukeJrsub1: ..
Missiledine: He nods, "Very well. You three shall be in that
boat." He points to the boat Rolb is in. "We will transfer
some of the load to the other one." He tells Rolb to pass some of the food and gear to the other boat.
"That," He points to the other man, a tough, badly scarred fighter in ring mail "Is Yossarian. Yossarian
cannot speak."
DukeJrsub1: Corren looks up and nods to Yossarian
Missiledine: Sorry, scale armor, not ring
DukeJrsub1: i wondered. ring mail is useless even in AD&D
Missiledine: Yossarian nods back, doesn't look like a man
who smiles much either
DukeJrsub1: Corren returns to work
DukeJrsub1: fm question, how is the coutry between here
adn soche? any threats? or do we travel without armour?
Missiledine: Once the supplies are redistributed, which takes about ten minutes, Talbon says "We will
be proceding west, with the current for about twenty five miles. I will lead off.. I am looking for a
particular waterway into the Palood. It maytake some time to find it."
DukeJrsub1: okay. Corren stows his weapons and gets in the
boat, taking up an oar or whatever.
ElwingFD: well, I get in and get ready to shove off
DukeJrsub1: I can shove us off , i suppose/
Missiledine: The south bank of the river is the northern edge of the swamps. It is a pretty wooly area,
not somewher to go completely unprepared. There are humanoids in the swamps, sometimes
Jhensari, raiders out of Khun Dhagra use it, to say nothing of brigands, river pirates, poisonus
snakes........
DukeJrsub1: right. armour it is.
Missiledine: Might want to wait for Rolb to settle down
DukeJrsub1: Corren waits....
DukeJrsub1: okay. we left off with Corren waiting for Rolb and Rowen to settle before he shoves them
off.
Missiledine: Right
Missiledine: Talbon pushes off from the dock, as he does so he says "Don't trail your hands or feet in
the water, it'll draw the Coohlari or worse, the snappers.
When we get into the swamps watch the overhead branches for snakes. They should be sluggish
now, but you never know..."
DukeJrsub1: right
Missiledine: Rolb is seated and as he pushes away from the dock you can hear him grumbling
something about"....snakes...."
ElwingFD: snakes, why did it have to be snakes
Missiledine: lol
DukeJrsub1: Asps,,, very dangerous. You go first!
Missiledine: The next few minutes are fairly busy as you navigate your way through the other traffic,
then things will settle down
ElwingFD: who you calling an asp :-)
Missiledine: Swamp Vipers are common pests, as are Cobras
ElwingFD: joy
Missiledine: Wood Adders are found in the north..,.. All are very danderous
DukeJrsub1: Corren tucks un his breeches.
DukeJrsub1: I hate danderuff
Missiledine: oops
ElwingFD: dandy>
DukeJrsub1: 8-)
Missiledine: Once past the traffic the paddling becomes pretty easy, you are traveling with the current
DukeJrsub1: Corren keeps a sharp eye out.
Missiledine: Talbon leads you out into the center of the river, which is about a hundred and fifty yards
wide here
DukeJrsub1 has left the room.
ElwingFD: wow, what an eye he is keeping....so much he left the room
Missiledine: The most dangerous areas are close to the shore... all sorts of hiding places there
Missiledine: great. here we go again
ElwingFD: stay away from the shore
DukeJrsub1: okay. paddle paddle
Missiledine: Talbon and Yossarian stay about a hundred to a hundred and fifty feet ahead of you.
ElwingFD: um. why so far?
Missiledine: You don't know
DukeJrsub1: k.
Missiledine: Its a pleasant day, but it looks like it may rain later
ElwingFD: wait, how could that be if we're controlling the paddling
Missiledine: They are in their boat, you in yours.
Missiledine: Are you closing the gap?
DukeJrsub1: Corren jsut watches for snakes
ElwingFD: yes, we will stay about a boatlength behind
Missiledine: Okay, you can catch up. As you close in it seems like Talbon stops talking
Missiledine: Fortunately there have been enough cool nights that the bug population is down sharply,
but there are still a few about
ElwingFD: I will make it a habit of trying to listen if Telbon starts talking
DukeJrsub1: in the stern? Rolb?
Missiledine: Other than watching for wildlife and swatting bugs, the next several hour passd quietly
Missiledine: Yes
DukeJrsub1: then rolb is nominally in charge of the boat.
Missiledine: Ok
DukeJrsub1: i think that is boat protocol or something
ElwingFD: I don't think it works that way
Missiledine: as it gets on to noon, you are all starting to get hungry. Talbon calls that you should make
for the north bank to stretch and eat
DukeJrsub1: right. head for shore
ElwingFD: we follow him in
Missiledine: Talbon picks an area that is fairly clear of underbrush and approaches it cautiously.
Yossarian has a BIG crossbow loaded and ready
DukeJrsub1: Corren frees his shield and loosens his axe
Missiledine: Talbon pauses the boat about thirty feet off shore and looks around before paddling
closer. Yossarian, in the front, jumps out and wades ashore
immediately
Missiledine: he looks around for a moment before waving you in
DukeJrsub1: corren also steps off the boat and wades
Missiledine: Talbon beaches his boat
DukeJrsub1: corren helps pull Talbon's boat up a bit. assuming that Yoss is pulling guard
Missiledine: After getting out and dragging the boat up on the bank, Talbon pulls out a rucksack with
food and a bottle of wine. Yossarian prowls around for a few
minutes before looking for food in the boat. There is a hamper of bread, cheese etc for you to eat in
your boat.
DukeJrsub1: Corren looks about a bit also before getting tot he rats
DukeJrsub1: ro the rations
Missiledine: talbon says, "We've come about halfway to the waterway. With luck we'll find it before
dark. If its late we'll camp on the north bank and enter
tomorrow."
DukeJrsub1: Corren digs into the bread and cheese.
ElwingFD: well, let's eat quick then
Missiledine: As you are eating, Rolb grunts and points out into the river. "Look at that." That, is a
Coolhari, about eighteen feet long. "Damn big lizard.!" Rolb says
Missiledine: "I hear they pay good money for their hides."
DukeJrsub1: Corren looks
Missiledine: Swimming, mostly submerged is a BIG swamp lizard. You haven't seen many bigger
ElwingFD: dont want to see anything bigger
Missiledine: They do get bigger, but not much. It passes without taking any notice of you
DukeJrsub1: Corren grins and ribs Rolb a bit. "Maybe you would like to take a little swim?"
Missiledine: Finishing your meals and taking a leak, your ready to travel again
Missiledine: "Nah! But he'd make a fine set of boots!
DukeJrsub1: Corren considers his boots. hmmmm....
Missiledine: "Several set actually."
Missiledine: Unfortunately the Coolhari was traveling in the same direction as you were. So you may
well see him again
DukeJrsub1: Corren makes sure his boot knife is snug but accessable.
Missiledine: Packing away the remains of his meal, Talbon says. "All right, lets be off." HE climbs
back into the boat and waits for Yossarian to get in and push off
DukeJrsub1: Lets go!
Missiledine: Rolb gets in and waits
DukeJrsub1: Corren shoves this time. afterletting Rowen settle
ElwingFD: don't rock the boat! :-)
Missiledine: You resume the quiet paddling much as before, but in the mid afternoon Talbon moves
closer to the south bank
DukeJrsub1: okay. Corren watches the tres.
Missiledine: Right
DukeJrsub1: trees
Missiledine: Okay. Talbon seems to be looking for something. At several waterways and openings he
pauses to stare at the land and surroundings before moving
on.
Missiledine: He dosen't say what he's looking for
DukeJrsub1: we back water so as not to overshoot
Missiledine: After about the sixth such stop, Rolb says, "iffen ya tell us wat yer lookin fer, mebbe we
could help ye find it, My Lord."
DukeJrsub1: Corren says little or nothing
Missiledine: Talbon ignores the remark
DukeJrsub1: Corren looks at Rolb and shrugs.
DukeJrsub1: Corren is more concerned with unpleasant wildlife
Missiledine: Finally, in late afternoon Talbon stops at an opening for a very long time. He finally takes
a tattered parchment from a bone case in his belt pouch and
studies it, comparing the parchment with the area in front of him
Missiledine: At last he put the parchment away and nods. "This is it." He looks up at the sky. "Maybe
two hours till sunset. We'll camp now." He turns the boat
towards the north bank
DukeJrsub1: follow.
Missiledine: The north bank is familiar to you Corren, its maybe four miles to the village of Soche and
eight miles from home
DukeJrsub1: corren jumps out, wades to shore and helps beach teh boats. Corren also mentions that
Soche is four miles away. and eight to his folks.
Missiledine: The area is cultivated fields, though no one lives in the immediate area. The harvest is
already in, so the area is empty now
DukeJrsub1: does corren know whose land this is?
Missiledine: This area would be the Baron's lands, though the peasants work it
DukeJrsub1: okay
DukeJrsub1: Pull up the boats from shore so they won;t float away
Missiledine: As long as you don't tear down any of the field stone walls or cut the few fruit trees found
here about, no one will care about you camping here
Missiledine: Rolb will gather some firewood
DukeJrsub1: right. set about camp. start a fire.
Missiledine: It takes about a half hour to unpack and get things set up.
Missiledine: Rolb will take over the cooking, unless someone else volunteers
ElwingFD: no cooking skill :-)
DukeJrsub1: Rolb has the honors, we watch
Missiledine: Talbon dosen't do much of anything. He moves away from the bustle, sits down on a
small boulder, opens up the parchment and studies it
DukeJrsub1: make a comfortable place to sleep, see to equipment,
DukeJrsub1: set up enough firewood
Missiledine: When the food is ready, in about another half hour, Talbon puts the parchment away and
joins you to eat. He dosen't say much, little more than
Yossarian
Missiledine: "Tomorrow the real difficulties begin." Talbon says as the meal draws to a close. "We
must be very, very careful."
Missiledine: It seems a pointlesws caution
DukeJrsub1: We should set up watch.
Missiledine: Talbon does not seem bent on taking one, but Yossarian holds up three fingers
DukeJrsub1: Corren says, "I will take middle"
Missiledine: Rolb looks at Rowan
DukeJrsub1: nodding to Yoss
Missiledine: "Do ya want a watch? Or shall I take it?" He asks
DukeJrsub1: Coren sees to his equipment
ElwingFD: I'll take first
Missiledine: Rolb grunts his gratitude and settles down in the gathering dark with a blanket, a flask
and a pipe.
DukeJrsub1: after looking over his equipment, Corren gets some sack time.
Missiledine: Once it is too dark to read by, Talbon puts away the parchment and wraps up in a cloak
and blanket
Missiledine: Rowna: The night is full of noises, you can hear grunting and splashing coming from the
river and across in the Palood
ElwingFD: how far are we from the river?
Missiledine: Maybe fifty feet
Missiledine: Close enough to see the boats, dimly, in the firelight
ElwingFD: and it's mostly open land here>
ElwingFD: ?
Missiledine: Along the river bank its wooded and overgrown, but beyond that there are open fields,
mostly stubble now, lined with field stone walls
ElwingFD: but we're a distance from anything wooded?
Missiledine: No, maybe twenty feet or so from the belt of trees along the river
Missiledine: The Palood is heavily treed as well, its across the river
ElwingFD: ok, well that's the area I should probably keep an eye on
Missiledine: The Lendalefoot river is thinning oiut here, starting to be absorbed into the swamp. Its
down to about 75 yards across and maybe fifteen to twenty feet
deep
DukeJrsub1: that is pretty big
Missiledine: There is little current now, and the water is thick with silt and decaying plant matter. The
air is thick with the smell of decay
DukeJrsub1: <... something is in the air.....>
Missiledine: The river is still used for trade, though you haven't seen much traffic today. Tomorrow the
barges will be loaded with goods from the faire, today all has
been quiet
Missiledine: Rowan: You have been sitting there for some time, listening and watching.... The fire is
dying out. There is wood available, do you rebuild it?
ElwingFD: yes
Missiledine: as the flames brighten, you hear a 'splooosh' and a thump and one of the boats seem to
shudder a bit
ElwingFD: hmmm, who's next to me
Missiledine: Corren
ElwingFD: I wake him
Missiledine: otherside is Yossarian
DukeJrsub1: gee, that was inevitable... :-P
ElwingFD: youre next up on watch anyway I think
Missiledine: Corren: Rowan shakes you awake
DukeJrsub1: Corren rolls upright. he grabs boer spear and shield
DukeJrsub1: boar
ElwingFD: I tell him what I heard and tell him I needed backup
Missiledine: Rolb is now awake, so is Yossarian and Talbon
DukeJrsub1: "grab a light. lets see."
DukeJrsub1: corren readies shield and spear
DukeJrsub1: corren goes first. with the light behind him to preserve night vision
Missiledine: Everyone will get up and follow. Rolb has drwan his sword. Yossarian has his Crossbow.
Talbon has no weapons out
ElwingFD: I have my staff
DukeJrsub1: Corern is on point
Missiledine: As you approach the water's edge you can see the mud and clay between the two boats
has been disturbed, the grass is wet
DukeJrsub1: corren probes ahead a bit with his spear. and kneels to inspect the mud. tracks?
Missiledine: Yossarian and Talbon move down along the outside of the boats, next to their boat. Rolb
takes the other side
Missiledine: Maybe, but your not good enough to be sure
DukeJrsub1: well, does it look like big clawed feet
DukeJrsub1: ?
Missiledine: Just a deep, shapeless impression... could be a coohli, or a bear or a man or a.....]
DukeJrsub1: okay.
DukeJrsub1: Corren checks the boats. any damage?
Missiledine: No, seem unharmed
DukeJrsub1: corren keeps his spear leveled toward the river. approaches cautiosly
Missiledine: Rolb is looking out across the water, peering into the dark "I thought I heard sommit..."
ElwingFD: Talbon, did you find something?
DukeJrsub1: corren prods the water.
Missiledine: "No." He says shortly and walks back to the fire
Missiledine: Its still wet
DukeJrsub1: had to be sure. return to camp
Missiledine: Yossarian follows Talbon
DukeJrsub1: how much wood do we have?
Missiledine: a fair bit, if the fire is kept small it'll last all night
DukeJrsub1: k.
ElwingFD: how far into my watch are we
Missiledine: You have an hour left
DukeJrsub1: well, corren snoozes
Missiledine: Talbon, Yossarian and Rolb go back to their beds
ElwingFD: I keep an eye in the direction of the boats, how much woodland is there around the boats
that someone or something could hide in?
Missiledine: In the dark it wouldn't be hard. Tough in daylight though
ElwingFD: do we have a torch?
Missiledine: Plenty of firebrands in the fire
Missiledine: No actual torches handy, maybe in the boat
ElwingFD: I wanted to shed some light towards that area, in case something comes out
DukeJrsub1: chucka brand.
Missiledine: Talbon has brought lanterns, etc. But they are still packed in the boats
ElwingFD: dont think I'll venture near the boats alone
Missiledine: awwwwww shucks!
ElwingFD: it's like the little boy asking if there are any monsters under the bed, and something says
no.
DukeJrsub1: ZZzzzz.....
Missiledine: :-)
Missiledine: Well, the next hour will pass pretty quietly.... We will open again with Corren's death
scene...eh, watch
Missiledine: Ty, you said Fridays are a bit crowded? Is there a better night?
ElwingFD: it will be tough to play consistantly other than tuesdays....I might be resigned to only once a
week
DukeJrsub1: right. I can drag out a death scene for some time "Alas... I am slain! Oh! What errant
misfortune afflicts this lonely wanderer...."
ElwingFD: ha
Missiledine: "Tis not as wide as a church door...nor deep as a well... but tis enough? Ask for me
tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man!"
ElwingFD: that's pretty good
Missiledine: All right, I'll talk to you this week and see what we can work out.... Shakespear, Romeo &
Juliet, Death scene of Mercutio.... Benefits of a Classical
Education
DukeJrsub1: okay, then. its a night
DukeJrsub1 has left the room.
Missiledine: Good night
ElwingFD: tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creep in this petty pace from day to day to the last
sylable
